HIGH SCHOOL

NEW BOARD MEETS.

HOSTEL ARRANGEMENTS. NEW MEMBERS WELCOMED. At a meeting of the Hamilton High School Board held yesterday afternoon there were present Messrs C- L. MacDiarmid (presiding), J. Primrose, J. R. Fow, F. A. Snell, C. A. Speight, S. B. Sims and J. E. Tidd; also Mr Eben Wilson, M.A. (principal) and Mr R. English (secretary). The secretary reported the appointment of the following members: — Messrs J. E. Tidd and J. Bollard (representing the Department), Messrs J. Primrose, S. B. Sims and F. A. Snell (Education Board), Mr J. R. Fow (Hamilton Borough Council), Dr. H. Douglas, Messrs C. L. MacDlarmid and C. A. Speight (elected by the parents).

Mr MacDlarmid explained that an annual meeting had to be held that day under the new regulations, which provided that the meeting must take place in June. The annual, meeting under the old scheme had been held in April. He would therefore not present any annual report.

Mr MacDlarmid, who had already been elected chairman in April, was again elected without oppositionThe chairman extended a hearty welcome to Mr Fow. He also expressed regret at the loss of the services of Mr de la Mare, who had taken a very keen interest in the schodl. On Mr Mac Diarmid's motion a resolution of appreciation of Mr de la Mare’s services was carried.

New Girls’ Hostel.

The secretary advised that he had received a telegram from the Minister of Education authorising the leasing of “Sonning” school as a girls’ hostel, provided the rent should be paid out of the profits on the hostel itself. This arrangement was satisfactory. Mr Tidd asked whether the chairman considered it was right for the board to accept responsibility for making the hostel pay. The chairman replied in the affirmative. Mr Tidd said this had been the view of the old board also.

Mr Fow said he thought the new hostel, if advertised, would be much more popular than the one now in use. In reply to further questions, the chairman said he understood the Minister’s telegram meant that the board should do everything possible to make the hostel pay. He had communicated with the present lessee of the property, the Diocesan Board, and was now awaiting the draft lease. The lease was to be for two years from the beginning of next year, and the board had asked for the right of renewal for two further years. Boys’ Hostel.

The secretary reported receiving a telegram explaining why the department's architect had not visited Hamilton as early as was proposed to discuss the plans for the new boys’ hostel. The message stated that this official was engaged in the earthquake area but would come to Hamilton as soon as his work there was ended.

Motor Mower. It was resolved to ask the Department to make a grant for the purchase of a new water-cooled motormower at a cost of about £240.
