Mr S. Lye has returned from a holiday at St. Helier’s, Auckland. Mr A. E. Russell, a director of Messrs J. J. Niven and Co., has left Wellington on a visit to Australia. Mr W. A. Leitch, of Pio Pio, and T. G. Wildermoth, of Raglan, are Gazetted deputy-registrars of marriages. Bishop Cherrington returned to Hamilton from a country tour in the Kawhia district last night. Mr R. Worley, Borough Engineer, is spending a few days in Auckland, and is expected to return on Tuesday. Messrs T. Weir, of Tokoroa, and E. R. McCarthy, of Arapuni, are Gazetted rangers under the Animals’ Protection and Game Act. Mr. W. A. Curteis, the new headmaster of Hamilton East School, arrived in Hamilton from Gisborne yesterday. Mr J. Pascoe, of Auckland, sailed from Auckland for Sydney yesterday on the first stage of a trip round the world. Mr Frank Hutchens, of the Sydney Conservatorium staff, who has been spending a holiday in New Zealand, will return to Australia next week. Messrs J. Woodhouse, R. B. Williams (Taumarunul), J. M. Henry, W. Irnpett (Auckland), and Dr. G. Craig (Wellington) are at the Hamilton Hotel. Sir John Hewitt, who is in New Zealand in connection with the Order of St. John, passed through Hamilton yesterday on ills way from Wellington to Rotorua. The Hon. Sir Apirana Ngata, Minister of Native Affairs, who had been attending a notable • Maori function at Whakatane, has returned to Wellington. Mr C. A. Proctor has been elected a member of the Mangawara River Board to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr W. D. Thompson. The Rev. E. Palgrave Davy, of Bayswater, Auckland, has received an invitation to the pastorate of the Union Church, Coonoor, in the Nilgir Mountains of South India. He has not yet decided on his answer. According to a notice in this week's New Zealand Gazette, Captain F. D. Pinfold M. 8., ceases to be attached to the 2nd. Field Battery, N.Z.A., and is attached to the Ist. Battalion, Waikato Regiment. In response to a deputation from the Lower Hutt Progress League, Sir Alexander Roberts has agreed to accept nomination for the Lower Hutt Mayoralty, which has been rendered vacant by the retirement of Mr W. T. Strand. The following promotions in connection with the Waikato Regiment are notified in this week’s New Zealand Gazette :—The undermentioned Lieutenants, Ist C Battalion, to be Captains: C. F. Thomas, H. D. Ta.it and A. P. Nelson. The undermentioned to be 2nd. Lieutenants: Frederick Baker, Donald Stanley Riddell, Thomas Craig Wallace, Trevor Wallace, Ralph Alexander McGougan and Neil Stewart Reid. At the conclusion of the Harbour Boards’ Conference at Auckland yesterday, the opportunity was taken by Mr A. G. Bigneli (Wanganui) to present Mr H. R. Mackenzie, who had presided over the gathering, with a handsome engraved cigar-box on behalf of the delegates, in appreciation of his services. Mr Mackenzie was also made the recipient of a cocktail set, a gift for Mrs Mackenzie, and a ca'se of pipes and a cigarette case, suitably engraved, for Mr Geo. Balldon. Mayor of Auckland.
