ENTERTAINMENTS.

THEATRE ROYAL.

JAZZ BAND AND "RAMONA."

A novelty that proved very popular at the Theatre Royal last night was a Rand of -Syncopators under the direction of Mrs Dorothea Morton. Some of the latest numbers, full of melody and snap, including "Hallelujah," from "Hit the Deck," were played. Musically, the band gave a very fine performance, getting splendid balance and tone, and being well controlled by Mrs Morton. But why were the players so serious? A little more abandon on their part would add tremendously to the effect. Mr R. Braithwaite's fine voice blended well with the band in "Ramona," and he was encored.

The picture "Ramona" again impressed the audience, and the acting of Dolores del Rio in the title role proved her one of the finest actresses of the screen. "Ramona" is a tale of early California —the days of Mission Indians —their trials and their tribulations. It is full of romance and sensation.

STRAND AND FRANKTON THEATRES

"Happiness Ahead" is a picture decidedly different from anything in which Colleen Moore has appeared in the past. "Happiness Ahead" is the story of a little country girl who marries a city card-sharp, believing him to be an entirely honest young business man. The manner in which she discovers the truth, and the subsequent action of the principal characters, gives "Happiness Ahead," a plot which is unique in the extreme. On the same programme William Fox presents a strong feature, entitled "No Other Woman." "THE MESSIAH." The seasonable oratorio, "The Messiah," will be sung at St. Paul's Methodist Ghurch on Tuesday night, with Mr T. S. Webster as conductor and organist. The augmented choir has been practising for some time, and has reached a high standard. The soloists will be Mrs V. Clark, Mrs T. S. Webster, Miss 1. Grice, Messrs Joseph Battersby and W. H. Williams.

SUMMER DANCES AT REGENT.

Saturday night at the Regent Ballroom will mark the commencement of the Summer dancing season, in Hamilton. The ventilation system and the cooling and pleasant atmosphere which prevails at these popular dances, n.akes the Regent ideal for summer dancing, and a record season is predicted. Special supper arrangements will take the place of those formerly prevailing. On Saturday night a Grand Tennis Dance will be held and all patrons attending will obtain a voting coupon free, in favour of the Queen they desire to see the Queen of the Carnival. Free coupons will be obtainable at the ticket box on entering the ballroom. The Regent Band will again dispense snappy dance numbers.
