THE HURDLES TO HIGHFLOWN. THE PLATE WON BY PATERE. DESERT GLOW WINS THE CUP. (Special 'to Times.) TE AWAMUTU, Saturday. The Waipa Racing Club held its annual meeting here to-day in fine weather. There was a good attendance, all parts of the province being represented. The various events on to-day's programme attracted good fields, and some keen racing was witnessed, the course being in excellent order. Following are the results: — PIRONGIA HANDICAP HURDLES. Of £110; 1£ miles. 1 HIGHFLOWN, Mr R. P. Ganley's b g by Hymettus—Freebird, aged, 10.5 (E. Stanway) 1 6 GALA DAY, Mr C. Matthews' br m by Quin Abbey—Bell Crispin, aged, 9.10 (E. Winner trained by N. J. Prenter. Paeroa. Highflown was the elect of investors with £296 from Star of the East (£262 10s) and Master Roley (£249 10s). Gala Day was sixth fancy with £136 10s.

Gala Day, Gold Rain, and Highflown got all the best of the start and soon had a break on the rest of the field. Passing the stand after jumping two hurdles Highflown was in charge from Gala Day, Bracken Abbey, Lady Spalpeen, Lord Abbey and Gold Rain. Highflown and Gala Day went right away from the others along the back, where Bracken Abbey, Lady Spalpeen and Lord Abbey were at the front of the next bunch. Highflown and Gala Day turned for home in that order, the former jumping the better of the pair and winning by one and a-quarler lengths from Gala Day, who was four lengths in front of Lady Spalpeen. Star of the East was fourth, and then came Lady Cintra, Farndon and Master Roley. Time, 2.i4.

Most money came for the Te Rapa candidate, Macroom, who was sent out with £767 10s on her chances. Flying Juliet was next in demand with £537 10s, while Leitrim was third choice with £507 10s. Te Koroke was the outsider with £277.

Macroom began best from the inside position, but Takutama soon joined her in the lead, this pair showing the way along the back to Flying Juliet, and Waltzer with the other pair close up. At the end of two furlongs Macroom again had charge, and showed the way across the top to Flying Juliet, Leitrim and Waltzer. Approaching the turn the Held closed up, Te Koroke endeavouring to get a run through on the rails, but was disappointed. Macroom led into the straight from Flying Juliet, Takutama, and Te Koroke. Flying Juliet won very easily by a length from Te Koroke, who got up in the closing stages to beat Macroom by half a length. Takutama was fourth, and then came Waltzer and Leitrim. Time, 1.28. Most support came for Indolent (£576 10s) with Haviland (£442 10s) and Unoco (£270 10s) next in demand. Roman Pearl was fourth fancy with £lB3 10s, and Patere tenth choice with £lO2.

Haviland, Roman Pearl, and Patere were first to break the line, Patere taking charge and showing the way along the back to Roman Pearl, Arcade, Haviland, and Unoco. Half a mile from home the order was Patere, Arcade, Roman Pearl, Unoco, Dainty Manners, and Haviland. Patere still had charge as the straight was entered, where Unoco, Roman Pear], Haviland, Arcade and Dainty Manners were the closest of the others. In a good finish Patere got the verdict by a bead from Roman Pearl, who was two lengths in front of Unoco, Princess Rain was fourth, and then came Indolent, and Dainty Manners. Time, 1.16 3-5.

The winner paid a double-figure dividend.

Mervette and Prodicc were the quickest to begin, this pair showing the way past the stand to The Lover, Siaosi, Papatu, Komak and Desert Glow, with Eh Timi and Transformer last. Going along the back Mervette and Thei Lover were practically on terms in front and then came, in a bunched field, Prodice, Siaosi, Papatu, Desert Glow and Komak, with Transformer still whipping in the field. Across the top Mervette and The Lover were together in front and then came Siaosi, Prodicc and Papatu, together with Eh Timi and Desert Glow racing next. Mervette was the pilot into the straight, attended by Mervette, The Lover, Siaosi, Prodice, Papatu and Desert Glow. The last-named got a run through on the rails over the last half-furlong and in a good finish got the verdict by a neck from Siaosi, who was a similar distance in front of The Lover. Mervette was close up fourth, with Prodice, Papatu, Komak, Tidal and Transformer in that order. Time, 2.7 1-5. Cup Presentation. After the race Mr D. S. Reid presented the cup to Mr Loomb on behalf of the owner of the winner and a gold mounted whip to the rider, G. France. This is the third year in succession that F. E. Lucy Rose began quickest, showing the way through the straight to Always, Maurea, and Rarangi. Along the back the field bunched up, Lucy Rose still having charge from Always and then came Rarangi, Maurea, Boomerday, Wenday and Scat. There was no change across the top, Lucy Bose and Always leading into the straight from W enday and Scat. In a keen finish Lucy Rose jasted long enough lo win by a head from Wenday, who was half a neck in front of the fast finishing Scat. Always was fourth and then came Rarangi, Maurea and Boomcrday.
