NEW ZEALAND AT ITS BEST. SOLID AND PROSPEROUS. That New Zealand is one of the most solid and prosperous countries in the •world is the opinion of Captain W. JWade, M.8.E., representative of the Manchester Ship Canal Company in New Zealand and Australia, who is on one of his periodical visits to the principal ports of the Dominion, advocating the development of direct trade between New Zealand and the great industrial area in and around ManChester. Mr Wade arrived back in Wellington the other morning after having completed a tour of the South Island. “Of course I saw your country in its best spring garb,” he informed a Dominion reporter, “but I was much struck with the evidences I saw on every hand of solidarity and prosperity. This was most striking in com - parison with conditions in New South Wales. The freshly-painted houses and well-tended fences and buildings all pointed to prosperity. The fact that New Zealand, with its one and a quarter inillon of people, exported produce to the value of £50,000,000 last year, is ample evidence of the prosperity the country* is enjoying. Of course, in common with other parts of the world, you have had your periods of trade depression, but there are ample signs that New Zealand has turned the corner, and is on the highroad to prosperity. There is a feeling of confidence abroad such as does not exist in countries cursed by labour troubles, where nothing is certain.” Mr Wade will confer with the Wellington Chamber of Commerce and the Dairy and Meat Boards concerning direct shipments of New Zealand produce to Manchester.
