SATURDAY’S CRICKET

FIRST REPRESENTATIVE MATCH. HAMILTON AND WAIPA DRAW. GOOD SCORING ON BOTH SIDES. / RESULTS OF ALL LOCAL GAMES. Chief Interest among cricket supporters on Saturday was centred on the first representative fixture of the season between Hamilton and Walpa. .Conditions were perfect for the match, which resulted In a draw. Batting first, Walpa declared at 236 runs for nine wickets and Hamilton forcing the pace registered 213 for 7 wickets, when stumps were drawn. The Senior B. competitions were continued and the Juniors carried their weekly contests a further stage.

HAMILTON AND WAIPA. A DRAWN GAME. SOME FAST SCORING. The first representative match of the season was played on Saturday, when the Hamilton and Waipa sections of the Waikato Cricket Association met at Seddon Park. The wicket was in splendid order and the oulfield very fast. Winter, ihe Waipa captajn, won the toss from Taylor, and L. Shepherd and Oram opened to the bowling of Going and McLean. When 15 runs had been scored Pomeroy replaced Going, and bowled Shepherd with his first ball. In his second over the Hamilton man got Oram lbw. 26-2-15. Barnett and Tarr added 30 runs, and then Taylor came on, Barnett putting his first ball up in the slips, where Going took a smart catch. Smith put his leg in front of the first ball, he received, and four wickets were down for 56. Two Good Stands. Tarr and Winter now became associated in a long partnership which, despite frequent changes in the bowling, added 64 runs to the score before Tarr lifted Pomeroy into the safe hands of McLean in the longfleld. 116-5-33. A. J. Shepherd joined Winter, and the rate of scoring, which had been on the slow side, quickened. Both batting confidently and well, they added 75 runs before Winter was bowled by Going. 191-6-61. Shepherd continued to bat freecly, and when he had passed Winter’s score the latter applied the closure, with nine wickets down for 236. Hamilton Start Badly. Hawke and Pomeroy opened briskly for Hamilton. Pomeroy scored a single off Smith’s first bail, and Hawke a single off the next. Pomeroy hit the next two balls lo the square-leg boundary, but the fifth ball of the over swung on lo his pads and then on to Hie wicket, iO-1-9. Forcing the Pace. Skcet was next and he and Ilawke scored very freely until lie failed (o get across to one from Tarr and Philp took a good catch behind the wicket. 52-2-26. Hampton scored five singles before providing Philp with bis second victim, and when lie left the board read 64-3-5. Sensational Over.

Badeley and Ilawkc now proceeded fo pile on the runs at a great rate, Badeley hitting four G’s, a 2, and a single in one over from Barnett. Scoring at the rate of three runs a minute, they look the score to 162 before Badeley was caught. Clough was next, and he immediately opened out, scoring 20 in quick time. He hit Winter for 6, but trying to repeat the stroke off the next baU, was caught at point. 199-6-20. Seven runs later Ilawkc hit out at a ball of good length from Winter, missed, and was howled. lie had played a fine, vigorous innings for 90. Going did not last long, and Taylor and McLean were together when stumps were drawn, with the score at 213 for seven wickets, compiled in 70 minutes. The game thus ended in a draw. Messrs It. They were all out for 126, Y.M.C.A. proving a stiff proposition, knocking up 139 with only four wickets down. Y.M.C.A. made 142 in the' first, innings. The Hawke Cup elimination cricket match between Wanganui and Tara-

naki was continued yesterday in fine weather. The home team’s total for the loss of five wickets was 192 at the close of the first day’s play. The second ball of the first over saw Giesen dismissed, caught by Quickfall in the slips. The Wanganui batsmen collared the howling, the tail adding 177 runs before the end came. The principal contributors were Sewell 73, Hutchison 35, Darby 26 and London 19. For Taranaki Petty took four wickets for 95 runs, Quickfall three for 95, Lay one for 40, and Nasmith two for 77. Taranaki, with a first innings score of 190, commenced their second innings with Wilson and Nasmith. The first wicket fell when the total was 41, Nasmith going out leg before to Treadwell, with 21 to his credit.
