HAMILTON WEST SCHOOL

FAIR AND SPORTS. PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION FUNCTION. A PRONOUNCED SUCCESS. In order to secure funds for the purpose of effecting several muchneeded improvements to the school and grounds, the Hamilton West School Parents’ Association held a fair in the school grounds on Saturday afternoon. Perfect weather combined with a large attendance to make the function a success, and the funds of the association should benefit considerably. Athletic sports catered for the wants of the younger generation, and in spite of the heat of the afternoon all the events were well contested. During the afternoon the Pipe Band rendered several selections which were much appreciated. The function was officially opened by Mr Sims, chairman of the School Committee, who, in a short address, eulogised the objects of the Association, and urged the parents to give it their support. He said that already the results of their efforts were to be seen in the school in the shape of cupboards and various other improvements. He then declared the fair to be open. The president of the association, Mrs Kent-Johnston, and the headmaster of 'the school, Mr Henderson, also spoke. The school grounds were decorated with flags and pennants, and several well-laden stalls were arranged around the front playground. The following were the stallholders:—Produce and flowers, Mesdamcs Owsley and F. Allen, and pupil helpers; cakes, Mesdames Mason and Redman; sweets, the lady teachers and Standard VI. girls; afternoon tea, ladies of the committee; pictures, J. BongaYd, K. Simcock and S. Ready; dips, Mr A. Dc Lacey; putting competition, Mr Kent-Johnston; nail-driving, 11. Tr/loar and B. Norris; shooting gallery, B. Wadham and I. Peace. Children’s Concert. During the afternoon the visitors were entertained by the pupils of the infant school, who have been coached by the headmistress, Miss McKenzie. The children gave a pleasing rendition of several songs, and also performed a number of action songs, which were warmly applauded. Athletic Sports. The sports were held on the playing field and attracted large enLries. At the conclusion the prizes were presented by Mrs Kent-Johnston, the president of the Parents’ Association.
