TREATMENT OF COAL.
EXPERIMENTS IN BRITAIN. A SMOKELESS FUEL. FOR USE ON STEAMERS (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received Dec. 10, 12.45 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 9. The Daily Express says the Government’s coal experiment includes a test of the use of residue from low temperature carbonisation. This produces a smokeless fuel, but in most cases it is difficult to burn. Recent research has resulted in the invention of a pul.arising plant, making the residue cheaper for steamship fuel than either coal or oil. In the presence of the Admiralty, Board of Trade and British, French and Dutch Shipping representatives, a successful experiment with the new fuel was carried out aboard the Hororata. The steamer will shortly thoroughly try out the fuel on a voyage to New Zealand.
