'The number of racing days was 319, the same as in 'the previous year, and 2523 races, or one more, were run. Stakes totalled £591,780, or £85,476 less than in 1926-27. Of the total amount invested on the totaiisalor, £6,489,047 was paid in dividends. Hence, the patrons of the machine received only 17s out of every pound invested. The balance of £1,145,030 was distributed as follows: —Racing clubs (74 per cent, of gross investments), £572,550, and unpaid fractions, £38,031; Government (21 per cent, of investments), £190,852, and tax on dividends, £343,591. The Oovernmeiil also received £29,589 in taxes on slakes, making its total £564,032. With their share of the tolalisator receipts and the unpaid fractions, the racing clubs received £610,587,
