NEW ZEALAND RAILWAYS.
CAPITAL EXPENDITURE. 47 MILES OF NEW LINE. Capital expenditure on the New Zealand railways at March 31, according to the annual return furnished by the Public Works Department, amounted to £58,707,458, comprising £51,187,370 on lines opened for traflio and £7,610,082 on lines under construction. Comparison with the previous return shows that during the year the capital cost of railways open for traffic increased by 003,460, representing expenditure on open lines and the cost of sections transferred to the Railways Department. The amount representing unopened lines has mcreased by £765,521, but it still includes the Tauranga section, now completed, the cost of which is shown as £1,463.15a. Working railways in the North Island represent an expenditure of £27,501,249 and unopened lines £7,062,050. These two amounts constitute 58.78 per cent of the total. The corresponding amounts for the South Island are £23,014,823 and £4 69,433. The balance of £149-903, comprises the Lake Wakatipu steamer service and miscellaneous items.
At March 31 there were open for traffic 1399 miles of railway in the North Island and 1781 miles in the South island, a total of 3180 milesAccording to the latest return, at June 23, there wen; 1437 miles in the North Island and 1790 miles in the Souln, a total of 3227 miles.
