LICENSING BILI
ABSENT MEMBERS’ VOTES. (Times Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Though there is no sign of the Licensing Bill promised for this session by the Prime Minister, the subject is kept thoroughly alive in the lobbies and one interesting phase has developed. Both branches of the Legislature, responding to invitations from the Empire Parliamentary Association, have nominated representatives of the New Zealand Parliament to represent the Dominion at the coming conference in Canada.
It appears that the three delegates from the Lower House, the Hon. W. Nosworthy and Messrs W. J. Jordan and T. W- Rhodes, represent lost votes to the Prohibition section- The Minister of Labour (Mr Anderson), who is still in London, is another vole for the no-license section, and Mr 11. L. Taplcv was also counted with the majority of 11 which voted for Mr .McCombs’ amendment last session to place the hare majority in the Bill introduced by the Prime Minister. Mr Taplcy, however, is likely to be in his place before the subject comes up again, together with Mr Wilford and Sir Joseph Ward, who are not on the side of Hic No-license section.
The question of pairs for Messrs Nosworthy, Jordan and Rhodes arises,, hut ttiese can scarcely he arranged when there is an absence of information as to what shape the Licensing Bill will take this year.
