MOTHERS' UNION.

CATHEDRAL BRANCH The Cathedral branch of the Mothers' Union met on Thursday at the Cathedral. The Very Rev. the Dean, assisted by the Kiev. 11. Sell.and the Rev. J. Rich conducted the service. Four new members were admitted. The Dean's address, based on the text "Where there is no vision the people perish"' was most hejpful and inspiring. The congregation, numbering about fifty M. U. members and interested friends adjourned to the hall, where delightful afternoon tea was provided by Mesdames Money, E. H. Hammond, Caldwell, and Woodward. Dr. Spencer later gave a very interesting address, and whilst dealing primarily with "the child" he touched upon the subjects of eugenics and spiritual healing, and upon various points affecting the life and welfare of the child and the nation —all of which gave the listeners "to think." Mrs Barnett expressed the thanks oX the Mothers' Union to Dr. Spencer for his most interesting address, remarking that the views*of a thinking Christian layman carried a good deal of weight. She had been very glad to hear his remarks upon the subjest of spiritual healing. At a short business meeting the secretary, Mrs R. Clark read the minutes of the last meeting—These were confirmed. It wac decided to meet again on Tuesday, June 26, at 2.30. The branch secretary, Mrs Clark, reminded members that anything they wished brought before the council in July must, be brought up at the next branch meeting, on June 2C. Before the arrival of the speaker for the afternoon, the Dean used the occasion to bid farewell to a most valued member of the Cathedral congregation, Mrs Seddon, Senr. lie expressed the regret of the Sewing Guild, of (he Mothers' Union, and his own sense of loss. Mrs Seddon's rJhstant and faithful support In all branches of Church work would be greatly missed and her regular attendance at the daily services—7 a.m. and 5 p.m.,—had been an inspiration and help to him and to the staff. Mrs Seddon left for Timaru last night where she will make a round of visits before settling down.
