CRITICISING EVIDENCE
IS IT PERMISSIBLE? “BREEZE” IN COURT. A sharp exchange of words took place between Mr W. J. for the defence, and Senior sergeant Sweeney, prosecuting on behalf of the police, in a case in the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court this morning. Mr King was referring to what he described as extraordinary statements made by one of the witnesses when the police officer interrupted, contending that counsel had no right to criticiae the evidence of witnesses. Mr King: Of course I can. I have never heard of that before. The senior sergeant then produced a volume o f Statutes in which he quoted t,hat counsel could not criticise in icpt> to a statement. . Mr King:But lam not replying. lam commencing my address to the Court on the case. I shall go right ahead Senior Sergeant Sweeney dissented and eventually the case was proceeded with.
