KNITTED SUITS.

SOAR IN PRICE. LONDON, April 7. The new Knitted suits axe very smart this season, and there are many novelties in design and in knitting which were made up for those going to the South of Prance, but are now being adapted for town and country wear. Many of the fine stockinette suits, with their smart metal woven stockinette jumpers, are worn for the morning shopping, and even make their appearance among the tailor-mades at the smart restaurants at lunch time. In one of the new collections of these things I saw a charming suit in Channel blue, made entirely of the metal-woven stockinette, which was used as trimming, cut on the bias, for the collar and pockets. This material was one of those with a softkback, as many women are objecting to the harshness of metal-woven material when they happen to be unlined. The newest striping in the wool and silk jumper is diagonal, and solne of these stripings are very smart, as they are narrow, and can show a variety of colours. A good design was in red, with a diagonal stripe of navy and a zigzag of white. Some of the new fine stockinette jumper suits show a sunray pattern of fine tucks on the jumper, and there are others made with a cross-over bodice and contrasting skirt. One of the latter, copied from a French model, had cross-over in red, with a piping of navy, and a navy skirt. More Colour Mixing. There is more colour v mixing this season than there has been for some time, and there is likely to be even more as the season progresses. There is a new tine ribbed stockinette which is being used for tailored knitted suits, and with this is worn a jumper in the same tones or with a contrasting colour, and woven with metal. These suits are made with no collar at the back, but a long collar effect in front. The vogue for belts is very strong, and they are seen on many jumpers, some being made with the new large wooden buckles. Some Angora suits in the lovely pastel colours, that are typical of this delightfully soft stockinette, are made as dress and coat, the dress top being of matching crepe de chine, and finished with a frill to break the line. On one of these suits the coat and skirt of the dress had contrasting bands of colour; the angora was in a shade of lilac, and the bands in primrose and beige. Some of the new big coats for tennis and sports wear, or, as they are described, for “watching sports,” are in brushed wool or line flannel in white or grey, and embroidered in wool. One in white had daisies in every imaginable colour arranged closely around the collar and facing, and on the pockets; another, in grey, had a jolly design in red squares in cross-stitch on the corners of the coat, and a narrow wool embroidery in red brought round the edge of the coat, which was finished at the throat with a big tie of red ribbon. This was very smart-looking, and w r as by no means cheap. It costs nine and a half guineas, and the white one was seven and a half. Many of the knitted suits are as costly as tailor-mades, and a number of them are even more costly. The collection I was looking over this morning showed a range of price from 14 guineas to 20 and more in the case of very exclusive designs. All of which shows that these suits are now far removed from the old-fashioned knitted sports goods, and have advanced into the region of models. Little house-waistcoats, hand-knitted in bouclette, and embroidered in fancy designs, some with wool small fruit borders and others with Chinese designs, were as much as five and seven guineas, and these prices seem to be paid quite cheerfully, as the demand for knitted novelties is growing.
