CONTROL OF WOOL.

NECESSITY FOR BOARD. OTHER INDUSTRIES COMPARED. The need for -the establishment of a wool marketing board was discussed by the provincial conference of 'the Farmers' Union yesterday when Mr D. C. Snelling (Maungaturoto) tabled the following remit: —"Thai legislation be sought 'to enable establishment of a wool marketing board by producers of wool for export.". Mr J. Martin said ihe wool trust saved the Australian farmers many million pounds. It enabled them to store wool for manufacture and had many advantages. The board would be able to advise the. farmers what to ask for their wool and assist them in other ways. "Our experience of control boards should keep us clear of them," said !Mr Babe (Wakiki). "We have two now and they cannot be said to be very satisfactory. Here we get the full advantage of competition and we get buyers from all over the civilised world." Mj- Macky (Cambridge) said ihe Union would be well advised to drop the matter. Wool was a commodity which could be stored for several years-', and the market should he able to be controlled . and stabilised in the same way as the dairy industry, said Mr C. Jones i (Paekaraka). Captain Rushworth expressed doubt as to whether a control board would please the Sheepowners' Federation. | Another delegate suggested the. wool control board would be. soon established if Ihe other boards were put. on a belter footing. "If the dairy farmers cannot, con- | trol their board properly I do not see how the wool growers will." com- , mented Mr C. C. Munro (Clcvcdon). Mr \ E. Robinson, the secretary, , said the necessity for stabilising wool, in London was recognised to such an extent that the Colonial Institute took up ihe question of gambling In, "futures." There was nothing more; speculative than wool, and if the con- ; forenoe .was not going to pass the remit it would look as though it did not approve of the principle. : The remit, after further discussion, j was carried. j
