HORSHAM DOWNS.

Farewell Concert and Dance. Departing from our midst to reside at Morrinsville are two well-known social workers, Mr and Mrs H. Hirst, who have been closely associated with all athletic and social functions held in our district during the past few years. Before they left the local Social Committee and friends made a special effort to mark the occasion by arranging in their honour a concert and dance and the presentation to them of a 42picce diuner set. During the interval the chairman, Mr C. H. Boyd, called on the guests of the evening to accept the service as a memento from Horsham Downs. In replying, Mr Hirst said it had always been a pleasure to himself and Airs Hirst to assist with anything which came their way, and the enjoyment they had received had well paid them for any little effort on their side. The large audience then .stood and suiik "For They are Jolly Good Fellows," followed by three hearty cheers. The concert submitted was of a high order of merit and the Downs people were not slow to appreciate good talent when it came their way. The parly, which was organised by Mr Daldy andMiss M. McKenzie, was praiseworthy in every way. Mr Saunders and Mr .Parker made a special trip out to give

a few items, but had to depart immediately for another town engagement. Before leaving these gentlemen had to respond to many encores. Miss D. Gould with the highland fling and sailor's hornpipe, merited and received great applause, her grace and ease being very pleasing. Miss Mary McKenzie had to sing at least four songs, and she also presided at the piano for the whole concert. The Forsman Bros, gave an instrumental trio, with vocal parts, their items being well received. Mrs Nash seemed in fine form, and the audience made the most of their chance by encores. Miss T. Gould gave several humorous recitations with marked ability. An English concertina in the hands of Mr Emerson received wellmerited applause. Mr K. Eade's fine rendering of one or two old favourites was very refreshing. Mrs K. Aiken and Miss Haultain with many attendants had prepared a dainty supper for all. The decks were soon cleared for the dancing people, for which excellent music was supplied by Mrs G. Silcock. Mr F. W. Baker acted as M.C. Altogether a most pleasant evening was spent. Card Party and Ping-Pong. A committee has been set up, with Mr R. Dreadon as leader, to arrange caru parlies and ping-pong during the winter months. Jn the past this form of entertainment has proved quite interesting to many non-dancers, and if, is hoped these enthusiasts will again I urn up in good numbers to help make the evenings a success.
