CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. ,\t (he monlhly mating of the Council of the Matamata Chamber of Commerce, Mr B. C. Taylor presided. There were also present Messrs G. <■• Hell, E. C. Young, W. Halligan. P. S. Ryan, A. E. Wrigley and T. E. McMillan (secretary). Daylight-saving Opposed. In reply to the Chamber's resolution against the continuation of the Summer Time Act, Messrs Hockly and Reid, M's. P.. forwarded letters affirming that they would do all in their power to have the bill defeated on its next appearance. Regarding the question of giving the farmers of the Dominion an opportunity of expressing their opinion by means of a referendum, il was pointed out that this was a matter which could be brought forward by members of the Government only, according to Parliamentary procedure. • Banks' Interest Rate. The resolution passed by the Christchurch Chamber of Commerce, asking for a reduction In the hank rate of interest, was supported. Main Highways. The clerk of the Mafarnala Town Board requested' the Chamber's support to the proposed subsidiary highway from To Aroha lo Matamata via Manawaru. The Board also proposed lo ask the Main Highways Board to declare Arawa Street, and Hetana Street a portion of No, 10 highway district, in addition to the present route through .Matamata via Slation Road. The chairman remarked that a good deal of the traffic came through the business part of the town, and the request was heartily endorsed. It was stated that .notice-boards would soon be erected, directing travelling motorists to the business part of the town.

Typewriters for School. The secretary of the Matamata Junior High School Committee waited on the Chamber in connection with the classes recently formed for the purpose of teaching pupils shorthand and typewriting. The committee desired the assistance of the Chamber in the purchase of more typewriters for the classes. The sum of £26 had been subscribed as follows: School concert £lO, anonymous contribution of £3 from.a business man of Putaruru, ana the balance by various sums donated by parents. Classes hail commenced and lftere were two typewriters in band and two more ordered. 11 was desired eventually to have ten machines. The latter were supplied by the Department at £l4 9s each, and subsidy of £1 for £1 was allowed on voluntary contributions for this purpose. The secretary was instructed to notify the committee that the Chamber was in sympathy with the movement, but regretted that no funds were available for assistance. The Chamber was also of the opinion that four typewriters should suffice for the pupils' use, and recommended that the tuition be confined to those who were desirous of taking up a commercial career. Annual Meeting. It was resolved that the annual meeting should take place on June 18, a similar function to be held as in previous years, when members of Parliament, local bodies, etc., were invited to bo present. Details were left in The hands of Messrs Taylor, Bell and McMillan.
