Business has been a bit slack owing to the wet weather, although country orders have been fairly substantialConsiderable quantities of manures are - still being sold lor lop-dressing, and shipments of basic slag are disposed of immediately the ships arrive, and the next shiploads—one is expected . next week and another early in June—should also find good demand on the local markets. Ah increase in demand is shown for fowl wheat and maize, while pig feed and pig meals arc selling in fair quantities, at late rates. Other quotations remain unchanged. Fruit. The local marts report that the price of better-class apples has hardened by about Is per case. The demand for pears is only fair, but the price remains about the same. A large number of local lemons are being readily disposed of at satisfactory prices. Oranges arc scarce, but will be plentiful again when the Island steamer arrives next week. Vegetables. All varieties of vegetables are in good supply except caulillowers, which • are very scarce. The price for cabbages has hardened. Pumpkins are in good supply, while southern potatoes are in demand and sell at satisfactory prices. Fow and Co. report a large entry of poultry during the week Prices again showed an advance. Prime table birds arc in good demand, both cockerels and hens finding a ready sale, but cockerels are now becoming short. Prime ducks were also in good demand, selling as high as 5s 3d. Fish. Ilapuka, blue cod, butlerflsh, lerakihi and sohhapper are plentiful on the local market, and are in good demand, selling at late rates.
