NOTES FROM TE AROHA.

LOCAL HORSES DOING WELL. CANDIDATES FOR TE RAPA. (Special to the Times). TE AROIIA Saturday. Valkon ran two really good races at Avondale. In the Foley Memorial Handicap lie was always in the leading division, and but for being carried out wide in the home run by Star Stranger, would certainly have been placed nearer than fourth. On Wednesday in the principal event of the day he beat a good held when he finished second to In the Shade. As noted in these columns recently Valkon is improving and should run at least prominently at Te Rapa this month.

Taurimu for Te Rapa,

Taurimu was not started at Avondale on Saturday as the course was on the firm side and he was slightly sore. un Wednesday he contested the Mount Roskill Handicap and ran a fair race. He will be a contestant at the Waikato meeting and may run well as the Te Rapa frack suits him. It will be remembered that he scored there in October last .when his supporters received a very remunerative dividend.

Lady's Boy Surprises,

The Some ,Boy—Lady Potoa gelding, Lady's Boy, was very loyally supported by local sportsmen in his Saturday's engagement at Avondale. As he failed to gain a place on that occasion most of his backers decided not to endeavour to make good their losses in his Wednesday's engagement as he had to meet some very speedy sprinters. As he ran second in the Mt. Eden Handicap and paid a fine price, there are many who regret not having followed him up. Kerry Dance, winner of the Maiden Plate at Avondale, was put through his preliminary training last year at Te Aroha by 11. Eva. At that time he showed pace and gave promise of paying his way when properly placed. King Arch and Lady Spalpeen. King Arch looks an improved horse after his breif respite from work. Now that the sting is out of the ground he will gallop more freely, and is quite likely to get on the winning list again before long. The same owner's LadySpalpeen continues to be consistent, and ran good honest races at Avondale. Here racing condition is now becoming more solid, so she is likely to race prominently right into the winter season. Nancy Lee's Handicaps. Nancy Lee is rightly considered the best of the local sprinters, but under the weights she is called upon to carry, continues to be beaten by light weights. On the training tracks her work is very consistent, but she is not required to carry her racing weights. When she has to concede as much as 301 b to speedy candidates she naturally fails to repeat her track gallops. Ruffles and Orchus. Ruffles is making a good recovery from the effects of the recent throat operation and may make bis re-ap-pearance on the tracks in a few weeks. His full brother, Orchus, has built up splendidly, and should soon be ready to shape well with the colours up. Lucy Ross and Elope. When it became known that Elope was to be started in the Nursery Handicap at Avondale local backers a strons desire to support her,

more especially as Lucy Hose would be bracketed with the Chrysolaus filly on the totalisator. However, both failed to run" up to track form, and backers were left lamenting.
