ACCLIMATISATION.

THE AUCKLAND SOCIETY.

WAIPA RIVER CLOSED.

PUTARURU, Friday.

At a meeting of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society a report from England showed that 400 pairs of Hungarian partridges were being shipped. Mr McKenzie stated that endeavours were being made to import 500,000 common snipe from India.

The Ngaruawahia Club wrote asking that Arapuni Lake be declared a bird sanctuary.

The request was strongly opposed by ' local sportsmen, Mr Fitzgerald pointing out that the lake would be the only place available for sportsmen in the high country. He suggested as a compromise that the lower portion only, be closed. Mr Barnett seconded this amendment. which was carried with only one dissentient, and the area was defined as from the spillway to the southern end of Pearce’s property, about 4i miles up the lake. Mr S. C. Snell said the trout in the Waihou River were not in a satisfactory condition, due to the presence of cannibal trout, and he advocated that the river be declared open to minnow and spoon fishing for a year. Then it could be restocked.

The meeting agreed to declare the Waihou open for suoh fishing for one year.

Mr Peters said the large amount of pumice in the Waikato had killed many trout, and he advised that the Waipa be closed to help restook the Waikato.

Mr Allen seconded this proposal, which was also carried with only one dissentient.
