FOR HONOUR’S SAKE.
PROMISE TO A WOMAN. Because ho refused to answer a question at his public examination in bankruptcy, Kevork Kriss Chavoosian an Armenian who is now a naturalised British subject, has spent six month« in Portsmouth Prison. * Clmvoosian, when questioned by the registrar six months ago, declined to givo the name and address of someone who, he aJlogcd, defrauded him, as he had made a promise to a woman and was bound to honour it.
The registrar sent the case to the judge of the County Court, but Chavoosian still refused to give the Info ■- mation asked for, and the judge, while expressing the opinion that the man was probably actuated by the highest principles, said he had no option but to commit him to prison for contempt. Recently a solicitor suggested on his behalf that after the period of time he had spent in prison it might be considered that he had purged his eon tempt. The registrar, however, saio the man had been very perverse and obstinate, and ho could not seo that anything could he done until he decided to answer the questions. There was a further adjournment of tho examination, and Chavoosian was removed to Portsmouth Prison.
