RADIO CONFERENCE.

$ SPARK SETS ON SHIPS. DISTRIBUTION OF VOTES. QUESTION OF WAVE-LENGTH. (Australian & N.Z Cable Assn.) WASHINGTON, October 27. The Mobile Service Sub-Committee of the Radio Conference decided that spark radio sets should he eliminated from ship-board usage by 11)40, on the ground that messages sent out by such sets could not be kept within the bounds destined to be allotted to that particular service by the present conference.

The problem of the distribution of voting power at the conference is stili unsettled. An American .proposal favours one vote each in the case of an independent governing nation having the power to initiate, negotiate arid ratify an international treaty. This would give a . vote cacli to Ireland, Canada, Australia, New' Zealand, and South Africa, but not to India or the Philippines. The British delegates suggested that votes should be distributed by Administrations, which would make it possible for the British Empire to have 60 votes. LONDON, October 27. On his return from the International Radio Conference Mr E. C. Bckersley, of the British Broadcasting Corporation, said the most serious problem (hat confronted wireless was the lack of sufficient channels in the ether for all the services. Broadcasting was best between bands of 200 to 600 millimetre«*.nd 1000 to 2000 metres. Everyone wanted those wave-lengths. Britain would not surrender Davcntry, as the stations using long and medium waves in conjunction were the most valuable for rural populations. The short-wave experiments between England and America would be continued with the opening of the Chelmsford double aerial station \#th a wanelength of 24 metres within a .fortnight “if the American experiment works, which .is a big assumption I foresee,” said Mr Eckerslcy, ‘ the establishment of an enormous station in the middle of England, from which a beam will be directed to the Dominions, where it will be rcccßcd by spaced aerials. We do not intend to rebroadcast American items until the transmission has improved. ’
