THE CONFERENCE CLOSED.
VALUABLE WORK DONE. A SELF-SUPPORTING EMPIRE. (Australian A N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received Oct. 29, 11.25 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 28. The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, Lord Bledisloe, in closing the Agricultural Conference, expressed appreciation of Australia’s
hospitality in inviting the conference to
meet there in 1932. No Imperial Con--0 ference, he said, 'had been more constructive or had produced decisions more calculated to enhance Empire . prosperity in agriculture than the present.
Mr. Julius (Australia) stated he was sanguine the 1932 conference would have most important results, not only for Australia but for the whole Empire. Australian agricultural problems were legion, and admittedly insoluble without co-operation with the most .advanced investigators of the Empire. Australia had done much pioneering, particularly Farrer, nevertheless it did not claim to be more than a branch of the British tree of scientific development. Lord Lovatt satd the Office and the Ministry of Agriculture would support the Australian i conference whatever Government was in office. Professor Daniel. Hall (of Burma), said a self-supporting empire was needed. Britain was dependent on foreigners for 40 per cent, of her wheat and flour and 47 per cent, of her beef. The Dominions were capable of supplying the shortage.
