SCHNEIDER CUP TEAM.

CRITICS SILENCED. SIR S. HOARE'S TRIBUTE. WEBSTER RECEIVES DECORATIONS. (Rec. October 5, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, October 4. Right Hon. Sir Samuel Iloare, Secretary of State for Air, in proposing the toast of Flight-Lieutenant Webster and the Schneider Cup team at a Savoy luncheon, emphasised the victorys significance as " recently we had not been in the habit of winning international events. Lieutenant Webster's speed crushingly answered those critics who refused to believe that either the engine or human beings were capable of the strain. The modern English man is well trained in body and mind. He is as hard as nails and as steady as a rock and he achieves feats formerly imagined impossible." Sir S. Hoare announced that His Majesty had approved of the addition of a bar to Webster's Air Force Cross. Air Vice-Marshal F. R. Scarlott attributed the victory to skilful negotiation of the hairpin bends in which the British simply shot ahead. Flight-Lieutenant Webster in responding said: "I merely happened to be the pilot of the fastest machine."
