COMMERCIAL NEWS.

HAMILTON MARKETS. - . PRODUCE. Business is reported to- be looking up. Substantial orders for grassseed were received over the week, and on account of the exceptionally i bad harvest in the Northern Hemisphere an increase in prices is expected shortly, as there will be a big demand for export. Bran and pollard are slow of sale, while sucrosine and barley meal are going out steadily. There is a better demand for seed potatoes, while fowl-wheat finds a steady market. Quotations continue wheat, 9s 6d; maize, 8s 6d; pollard, lis; bran, 8s 6d; sucrosine, 13s 6d: barley meal, 13s: chaff, 9s; oats, 55.; seed potatoes, 9s Gd to 15s per cwt. Fruit. Fruit is coming to hand slowly in small supply and meeting with a good demand. Apples are in small supply, while pears are very scarce. Oranges are not too plentiful, the last shipment heing of very excellent quality. Quotations are as follows: —Apples : Delicious, 12s to 15s; Stunners, lis to lis: Rome Beauties, lis to 14s; Washingtons, 10s to 12s; Statesman, Us Gd to 13s 6d. Pears: Winter Coles, 13s to 16s; Winter Nellis, 12s 6d to 15s Gd; Josephines, 13s to 16s Gd. Island oranges, £1 to £1 4s a case; lemons, 10s to 14s. Vegetables. Potatoes are on hand in good supply and quality, and' are meeting with a steady demand. Cauliflowers are scarce, the supply available finding a ready market. Cabbages are in fair supply and are selling freely. Quotations are: Potatoes (Southern), £8 5s a ton; cabbage, 6s to 9s a sack; cauliflower, 8s to lis Gd; carrots, parsnips and beetroot, Is a dozen bundles. Poultry. Messrs J. R. Fow and Co. report a fair yarding of poultry for their mid-week sale, all of which wore disposed of at prices on a par with last week's quotations. Prices were as follows:—Cockerels, heavy 4s to 4s Bd, light 4s to 4s 4d; hens, heavy 4s to 5s 3d, light 3s 6d to 4s 3d; ducks, 2s 9d to 4s 10d; turkeys, 10s 6d to 12s 6d; hen and chicks, 13s to 21s. Fish. With the advent of the warm weather flounder are now coming to hand in fair supply. A plentiful supply of fish of the deep-water variety, blue cod, hapuka, butterlish, kingflsh and moki, is available, for distribution. Grays are in plentiful supply, as also whitebait from Tauranga. Prices show no alteration on previous quotations. Dairy Produce. I

Eggs continue in plentiful supply, the wholesale price ruling at Is 3d. Butter quotations continue at Is lOd, is 9d and is Bd.

HAMILTON STOCK SALE. The Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Co., Ltd., report:—At Frankton yesterday, we had a good yarding of fat and store cattle, a fair entry of fat sheep, and a good yarding of fat and store pigs. Prices for beef were equal to last week's quotations. Fat wethers and hogget-mutton were about the same, but prices for fat ewes were a little easier. There was good competition, and prices were again lower We quote:—Light fat steers, £lO to £lO 8s: prime heavy cows and heifers £8 5s to £9 lis, 18 of this class from Dr. Gribben averaged £8 18s 4d; medium quality, £6 2s Gd to £7 7s; plain and unfinished, £5 3s to £5 14s; small vealers, 28s to 30s: runners, £3 7s; store cows, £3 7s lo £4 2s: 3-year store steers, £6 2s; fresh conditioned 4-year bullocks, £7 5s to £8 ss: 2-year Polled Angus steers, £4 16s to £5 165.; yearling Polled Angus steers, £3 9s; choice yearling Jersey cross heifers, £4 15s to £5 2s Gd; small yearling Shorthorn steers, £3 Is; dairy heifers, £6 5s lo £8 ss.

Prime fat ewes, woolly. 295; fat shorn ewes, 235; woolly ewes, plain, 26s Gd; fat woolly wethers, 325; prime fat woolly hoggets, 29s Gd; 1 extra prime hogget., 395; fat shorn hoggets, 29s 6d; 5 fat lambs on account W. Chitty realised 265; shorn store hoggets, good, 20s 2d; small woolly hoggets, 20s 6d to 23s 3d, cull ewes, 15s to 16s. Pigs.—Best baconers, £2 18s to £3; others, £2 12s to £2 14s; porkers, 38s to £2 4s; slips, 22s to 265, weaners 14s to 16s; small weaners, 8s to 12s.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., Hamilton, report:—At the Hamilton sale yesterday, a good yarding of beef came forward, and last week's rates were maintained. Fat sheep were penned in average numbers, and sold at fully late rates. Store cattle met with a strong demand and sold well. We quote: Fat heifers, £7 5s to £8 2s Gd; light do., £5 5s lo £5 15s; fatcows, £7 2s Gd to £8 ss; lighter do., £5 15s to £6 10s; fleshy cows, £4 2s 6d to £4 7s Gd; store cows, £3 to £3 6s; veal calves, £1 to £2 15s; fat wethers, £1 15s to £1 15s 3d; spring lambs, £1 5s 6d; forward hoggets, £1 4s to £1 5s Gd; store hoggets, £l. A good yarding of fat and store pigs came forward. The demand for all classes was much easier. We quote: —Heavy baconers, £2 15s to £3; light do. and heavy porkers, £2 7s to £2 13s; porkers, 35s to £2 4s; stores, 28s to 335; slips, 20s to 245; weaners, 8s to 14 s.

Messrs Dalgcty and Company Ltd., report having held their usual weekly stock sale at Frankton saieyards yesterday, as under:—There was an average yarding of beef. The demand was firm at late rates. Medium weight prime bullocks at up to £11; heavy extra prime young cows and heifers made up to £9 14s; prime young cows and heifers, £7 3s to £8 12s; light do., £5 to £6 ss, aged rough cows, £3 15s to £5; vealers at up to £2 145.; There was a fair yarding of store cattle, for which there was a keen demand. Grown bullocks, in fresh condition, made up to £8 ss; 3-year steers, £4 19s to £5 15s; lowconditioned cows and calves, £3 18s; store cows, £3 16s to £4 12s 6d; light store cows, £2 15s to £3 6s; yearling Shorthorn heifers, £3 8s; Jersey cross heifers ,£4 to £5 2s 6d; yearling Short horn bull, £4. There was an average yarding of fat sheep, but the quality generally was only moderate. Prices were about on a par with last %]e. Prime woolly wethers, 35s 3d; pVi'ine fat ewes, 295; extra prime woolly hoggels, 295; medium mixed sex hoggets, 22s 3d to 23s 6d. There was a fair yarding of pigs, which sold at late rates.
