RACING IN AUSTRALIA

MERRY MINT'S DERBY SHOWING. EXCITING FINISH IN THE STAKES. FAVOURITE LEFT IN THE EPSOM (United Press Association)'. SYDNEY, October 2. The Australian Jockey Chili's Spring Meeting opened at Randwick yesterday in sultry weather. The. attendance was eslimated at 80,000. New Zealand representation was small, but classy, though it did not meet with much success. Merry Mint who was New Zealand's only starter in the A.J.C. Derby, was third passing the stand the first time behind Maltfern and Chromium. Trivalvc was amona; the bunch early, but moved up with Winalot going along the back. Coming into the straight Winalot went to,the front. Merry Mint seemed to be in a good position at that stage and was loudly acclaimed, but Trivalvc was forced along on the outside and beat Winalot by half a neck, with Black Duchess third two lengths away. Merry Mint was close up fourth. Fifteen horses faced the barrier in the Epsom Handicap. There was a good start, except for the muchfavoured Aorangi, who was badly left. Fujisan, Vaals and White Fang were first to'show up, but on entering the straight White Fang and Fujisan faded out, leaving Vaals to come away and win easily by three lengths. Amounis temporarily showed up passing the Lcger stand, but finished eleventh.

In the Spring Stakes Limerick always had the race in hand, hut McCarten held him back in the early stages. The finish was exciting, Limerick winning by only a long neck from Pantheon. Piuthair ran a good race and finished fourth. Pillicwinkie was always well back. The following are the details of the racing:—

A good start was effected, and when the field settled down Maltfern and Cromium were leading, followed by Merry Mint. Approaching the straight Winalot seemed a likely winner, and Merry Mint also threw out a challenge, but Trivalvc came up on the outside and won by half a neck. Fujisan was first away, followed closely by Vaals, White Fang and Gimon. Aorangi was left at the start. White Fang moved up to second behind Fujisan turning out at the back. Entering the straight Vaals shot to the front, and had a runaway win, heading Mak Siccar by three lengths. Gothic was a neck away, third. Time, 1.38 J.

ANOTHER WIN FOR LIiERICK. TRIVALVE LEADS DERBY FIELD HOME. THE , EPSOM ANNEXED BY VAALS. On Saturday the big Spring Carnival of the Australian Jockey Club was Introduced at Randwick when, despite the fact that the weather was very sultry, there was an attendance which indicated the continued keen interest being taken in the sport by patrons at this prominent headquarters In New South Wales. While there were other Important events decided, perhaps the item of chief interest to New Zealanders was the Spring Stakes, an event which provided the Canterbury-owned candidate, Limerick, with the opportunity to give a further taste of his outstanding quality. The Derby was won by Trivalve, a Victorian candidate from the wellfancied Winalot with the New Zealander, Merry Mint, fourth. In the Epsom Handicap the well-performed Vaals led a useful field home and registered a quality performance in doing so.
