ILLEGAL GAMBLING. WELLINGTON, Saturday. Edward John Burton, aged 24, and Thomas Bolger (49), who pleaded guilty to being found in common gaming houses, following raids on Chinese premises in liaining and Taranaki Streets, were each fined £2. Charges of keeping the house were preferred against three Chinese, but as the case is to be defended a remand was made. Morris Owens (62), who is defending a charge of being found on gaming premises, was also remanded. SAVED FROM SUICIDE. AUCKLAND, Saturday. Frank Charles Ashman, aged 22, pleaded guilty in the Police Court to a charge of attempting suicide about 10.30 last night. Two hospital nurses crossing Grafton Bridge saw Ashman climb on to the parapet. Rushing forward, they were just in time to grab him and drag him on to the footwalk, where they held him until a constable arrived. Ashman had been an inmate of the hospital, suffering from cxces T sive drinking. He had evidently taken to liquor again after his release. He was remanded in custody till Monday for sentence.
