BOYS’ BOOKS.
WHICH ARE THE FAVOURITES? Do the authors of boys’ books who were the favourites 30 years ago maintain their popularity? It seems clear that they do, judging by the ballot arranged by Messrs Foyle, the dialing Cross Road booksellers. At the head of the list stand Ballantyne, Hcnty, Conan Doyle, Pddcr Haggard, Herbert Strang, Jules Verne, Capt. Marryat, Rudyard Kiipiing, and Charles Dickens in the order mentioned. The first of the moderns —Percy F. Westerman — who might have been expected to be at the head, comes next. Afterwards follow Kingsley, Talbot Baines Reed, Fenirnorc Cooper, Sir Walter Scott, Capt. Mayne Reid, Kingston, Brercton, MarivTe Fcnn, and Gordon Stables —• all, \,Hi one exception, old-lime favourites. The list of 25 authors closes with five moderns —Gilson, Gollingwood, Finnemore, Edward Ellis, and Archibald Williams, with one veteran —Ascott Hope.
The competition was arranged primarily for the entertainment of visitors to the Schoolboys' Exhibition. Twentyfive popular authors of boys’ books were chosen, and the competitors were asked to rearrange them in order of popularity.
