“KATINKA.”
SOME BEAUTIFUL COSTUMES. The costumes have arrived —and what beautiful costumes they are 1 It . is safe to say that “ Katinka ” will be j better dressed than anything previously staged here. The costumes and sccni cry, which were used in the Williamj son professional production, arrived j from Sydney this week. | There was to have been a rehearsal I on Thursday night, but when the memi hers were handed their costumes the | rehearsal was forgotten; and crowds of chattering, laughing girls quickly lost | themselves in the delights of “ trying them on.” And not only the girls, for the men seemed to he just as pleased in arranging themselves in the gorgeous clothes ! Think of the scope provided for the display of striking costumes—the first act is laid in Russia, the second in Turkey, and the third in Paris. The colour scheme is gorgeous. Katinka has a wedding frock which I am sure will make everyone gasp; it has a long train of ermine, and there is much glitter of silver and pearls. With this is worn a head-dress of pearls and silver. Then there is her Circassian costume, in which the most delicate shades are blended harmoniously. The ballet costumes are charming, the. Flower Ballet being particularly beautiful, giving the effect of the petals of a flower. Then there are the costumes of the Russian peasants and the women of the harem, one which caught my eye shading from the palest lemon to the deepest orange. The men’s Russian uniforms, 100, are very striking. What impresses one is the fact that there is nothing tawdry about the costumes; they are all of good quality, and give one an impression of richness. “ Katinka ” will certainly be well dressed.
