WARFARE IN CHINA.
NORTHERNERS UNITED.
CHANQ-TSO-LIN, GENERALISSIMO.
HEAVY FIGHTING REPORTED.
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) SHANGHAI, June 19.
Simultaneously with the installation of Marshall Chang-Tso-lin as generalissimo of the Northern forces, the Shantungesc forces launched a counter-attack in Southern Shantung compelling the Nationalists to retreat to Tsining, where they are preparing to make a stand. Heavy fighting and a tremendous toll of life are reported. Hitherto the Northern forces have been operating independently. It is believed the institution of a unified command under Marshal Chang-Tso-lin will alter the situation. The Middlesex Batallion will proceed to Weihaiwei to-morrow to reinforce the border regiment.
