MAIN HIGHWAYS.

NO. 2 DISTRICT. MEETING OF COUNCIL. The annual meeting of No. 2 District Main Highways Council was held this week. Mr. L. B. Campbell, District Engineer of Public Works, was elected chairman for the ensuing year, and Messrs. Lowe (Thames), and Campbell Johnstone (Raglan), were elected to the executive. It was resolved to recommend to the Main Highways Board that the following roads be declared main highways:— , Ohinemuri County—From Netherton Ferry to Hikutaia, Raglan County.—From Waikato River Bridge, at Tuakau, through Pukekawa, Glen Murray, Waingaro, and Ngaruawahia. Waikato and Piako Counties. —From Ohincwai through Te Hoe, Tahuna, Mangateparu to Morrinsville. lie Hauraki Plains County Council's application regarding declaration of road from Ngatea lo Tahuna was deferred. Waipa County.—From Kihikihi to Arapuni. An application for alteration of main highway between Barton's corner and Te Awamutu is to be taken up with the Main Highways Board and No. 6 District Council. A lengthy discussion took place on the classification of the Great South Road in the Waikato and , Waipa Counties. The representative of these two counties moved that a 4-ton classification be recommended. Several members of the council considered that fourth-class, permitting only 4ton loads, was rather low, and suggesting that the third-class, permitting G-lon loads as proposed by the Minister of Public Works, be adopted for a period at least. The question of increased maintenance subsidy by the Main Highways Board was discussed. The Waipa County representative suggested that the motor taxation be increased. During the discussion it appeared that the Main Highway between Thames and Coromandel was most in need of higher rate of subsidy from the Main Highways Board than the 30s for 20s at present in force. The Ohinemuri representative suggested that the highway be declared a Government road. The Thames County representative proposed a subsidy at the rate of £3 for £1 for this road.
