TE AWAMUTU BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. GENERAL BUSINESS. The visual meeting of Iho To Awamulu Borough Council was held last evening, when tlic Deputy Mayor (Mr B. MeGechle) presided, and there were also present Crs. C. G. Downes. W. .T. North, J. Monteflore, W. Swan, and V. 11. Vile. Leave of absenco was granted the Mayor and Crs. McCarroll and .Jeffrey. The town clerk (Mr D. Bockott) and the engineer (Mr W. D. It. McCurdie) were also in attendance. A deputation, consisting of Messrs T. Mclnnes and J. B. Teasdalc, junr., waited on the council, presenting a sketch plan of a proposed extension to the premises occupied by the Ford Sales and Service Co. As it was in the brick area, they asked for certain modifications. —Granted. Messrs S. A. Empson, and A. E. Patterson attended as a deputation from the local swimming club, and asked for certain improvements to be made regarding the conveniences at (lie swimming baths, scaling accommodation, extension of the dressing sheds, and the installation of two showers. Mr Empson said these improvements were urgently required. The Swimming Club was prepared to grant £5 towards Hie cost of timber for the seats, which would cost £l3. As it was a question of cost, it was left in the engineer's hands to report to the general committee, the matter to be treated as urgent. Firo Board. The borough solicitors notified that as the poll had been carried in favour of a Fire Board, the next step was for the council to make formal application to the Governor-General to issue the Order-in-Council constituting the borough a fire district. The resolution was duly put and carried. The auctioneering firm operating in the borough salcyards notified that the accommodation recently provided is insufficient for their requirements, and asked the council to erect further pens of at least double the present capacity. They also asked for permission to have a telephone installed, subject to the office being kept locked during the week. The chairman stated that the Works Committee had inspected the yards, and agreed that the request was only reasonable, but the question was one of finance. The duplicating of the pens alone would cost £-10 to £SO. They thought that if they put up the pens for the summer months, concreting might be put in later. It was decided to approach lhc firms interested to sec if they could meet the council in the matter. The Acting-Prime Minister notified the arrangements for observing Armistice Day.—lt was decided that two minutes' silence be observed at Jl o'clock on. Thursday morning. A proposal to form a Town Clerks' Association was received from the Town Clerk, Slralford. —The couned approved of lhc formation of the now body. „ ~. Messrs T. Spear and B. Collins strongly protested against the council leasing the drainage reserve lo Mr S. Clark without giving others at least notice. As the matter had not reached finality, notice of motion was given lo rescind the previous motion; then tenders can be called for the lease of the drainage reserve referred 10. It was decided to collect the dog tax for the year 1926-27, and also lo appoint Mr R. S. Clegg dog registrar for the year. Fees will be: Sheep dogs cattle dogs, and dogs used lor droving, 2s 6d each; all other dogs, 10s each. Works Committee's Report.

Mr Mathoson, or Mutu Street, had his place Hooded on Sunday, 17th. ultimo, by water from Alexandra Street. The cause was the smallness of the culvert. It will need to he removed lo give the water a free course. M Mahoe Street-Mulu Street intersection flooding also took place, due lo a culvert being too small. • Authority is asked lo construct, a culvert with brick sides and concrete floor and roof, the culvert to extend across .Mahoe Street, at a cost of £35. The N./. Dairy Co. complained of the lack ol water pressure. The matter was investigated, and no cause of trouble could he found. There was plenty of water at the time of the visit, immediately after the complaint. The part of Bailees' Avenue filled in last summer to bring the water to Kihikilu Road subsided a good deal, and caused a pool of water between Carlton Street and Kihikilu Road. The subsidence Is being made up, and all the water will come straight on in future. The report was adopted.
