POVERTY IN HUNGARY.
CHILDREN SOLD. TERRIBLE CONDITIONS OBTAIN.. (Reuter.) VIENNA, August 10. A peasant woman in the market place at Dcbreczin, Hungary, offered three of her children for sale. One, a 14 years old girl, was purchased for £3, while a three years old boy was sold for 255. A baby, which was nine months of age, remained unsold. An inquiry has disclosed that a terrible state of poverty exists among Uie „Magyar peasantry. The sale of children is a common occurrence aitd regular market prices exist. The maximum price realised is about £3, which con bo obtained fer children between the ages of 13 and 15 years. The buyers are farmers who seek cheap,- unprotected labour. ’flic probability is that these children will never again see their parCills.
