INCREASE IN RACING.
BUSINESS MEN'S PROTEST.
(3y Telefrraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCIIURCH, Tuesday.
At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last night Mr. A. D. Ford wrote that owing to exploitation of the betting public of the city by country racing clubs holding meetings at Riccarton retail firms found it increasingly difficult to secure the payment of accounts. All this was seriously interfering witli the running of business.
Another member said Ihere should be a protest about the number of race days 1 think he said it is a disgrace in a country like this that so much is spent on racing. A strong protest should go forward."
Mr P. R. Climio said the usual excuse for holding country meetings at Riccarton was the poverty of funds and racing track out of order.
Tito matter was referred to the Retail Traders' Conference.
