NEW TOWN DISTRICT.

PUTARURU PROPOSAL COMMISSION TO SIT. Next Tuesday a commission appointed by the Governor-General will sit in Putaruru to consider objections to the boundaries as proposed for the new Town district in Putaruru. The sitting of the commission will be a public one, and tiic members will be Commissioner for Crown Lands and the local Government valuer. The object of the commission is to definitely lix the line of demarcation, between the future town district of Putaruru and the remainder of the riding.

When this point has been settled Hie area decided on will bo gazetted and from then (lie procedure is automatic. A roll will lie compiled and published, ■ a returning officer appointed, and the first town board election held. As arrangements have already been made lo have the township revalued, I lie first rate struck by t.iie new board will be collected on the new basis, so that in all likelihood treble the amount of rates wilt be available at the same rate per £ than would have been the case under the old valuations.

The delay in reaching Ihc present stage has not been in any way caused by the committee appointed by Iho rate-payers, hut is due lo the difticully in getting the requirements of the Act carried out, owing to congestion of work in the Government offices. Now that matters have reached tiic present stale, it is hoped that future requirements of the law will lie expedited and that the new board will operate at 11s early a dale as possible so that several urgent works in Iho town area—notably lliose relating to health —may be gone on with without further delay. Five objections have been filed by ratepayers included in Uie proposed town area.
