A.R.C. WINTER MEETING

GREAT NORTHERN STEEPLECHASE. DICK WINS BIG EVENT. HURDLES TO BLACK CRUISER. MERRY DAMON ANNEXES HANDICAP (Special to Times.') AUCKLAND, Saturday. For Great Northern Steeplechase Day the weather was line, and there, was a large attendance of the public. In spite of the fact that the course was a good deal slower than on the first day there was again some very teen racing. Tlic principal event of the day’s programme, the Great Northern Steeplechase, was won by the diminutive Gluten —Zcaiandia Cole gelding, Diet, who is trained by W. S. Young, at Trentham. Black Cruiser scored in the chief hurdle race of tiic day, while the King George Handicap fell to the El-lerslie-trained galloper Merry Damon. One to Te Awamutu. In the Hunt Club Cup Steeplechase Monday, Cui Bono, and Mangahewa were withdrawn. Of tiic eight crosscountry performers the Cambridge candidate, Hypothesis, was made a solid favourite, with Stonewall and Pendavics next in demand. *■ Pendavics and Ngahinoponri were the early pacemakers, Hypothesis being slow to find his feet. Stonewall, Ngahinepouri and Pendavics were practically on terms as they showed the way over the stand double. Going up the hill the last time. Ngahinepouri and Stonewall were together, with Pendavies and Advent still in the reckonjng. Ngahinepouri and Advent had the finish to themselves, the former winning by half a length from Advent, with Hvpohesis seven lengths away in third place, and Stonewall fourth. Then came .Dimlight, Pendavics and Tres Ron, with Faber a long way back, last. The winner, who is a half-brother, ]iv Abcrbrothock. to While Comet., is a •rood cut of a jumper. He is owend and trained by George Reid, at lc Awamutu, but is not an easy horse to keep right, and has not raced for nearly twelve months. Advent., who also hails from Te Awamutu, is an aged mare by Advance. She finished well to-dai. Hypothesis was kept too far out of affairs in the early stages, but lus big weight lias to be allowed for. The Te Rapa candidate, Pendavics, jumped ail righjt, and indicated that lie may do Potter as a result of the outing.

The Ranfurly to Lomlnt. The dozen carded for the Ranfurly Handicap came out, the Woodville representative Rowley being installed a good favourite over Lomint and lligh-

ilown. Killule and Constellation were i about on terms in the lead going along the back, with Odd Sox, Pitou and Norma Talmadgc the most handy of the others. Killute and Constellation were • [he leaders right around to the straight P entrance, where Piton and Odd Sox were still the handiest of the others. The leaders were soon done with when it game to business, Lomint and Thursby coming through in the run home, for the former to win comfortably by two lengths and a half from Thursby, who was half a lengtii in front of Gay Comet. Quinvardia was fourth, and then came Rowley, Norma Talmadgc and Constellation. Form worked out well, as Lomint was runnerup toi Titancss on Thursday. The Catmint —Loloma titty finished full of running to-day. Thursby, a three-year-old gelding by Thurnham—Hessian, who was running in the fourth place on Thursday, put up a good performance to-day, as he was last at the half-mile post. Gay Comet finished like one whose turn also should not be far away. Rowley has yet to do better. Highflown was never dangerous.

Black Cruiser Scores in Hurdles.

King’s Guard was the only defection from the Rumuera Hurdles. In a big, even investing race Archibald was favourite from Cureaform, but there was good money for Crown Coin and Black Cruiser. Prince Rufus, Archibald, Karamu and Black Cruiser were the early leaders, Cureaform falling at the hurdle in the straight, when running last. As the horses came past the stand they were ail bunched, with Black Cruiser slightly in front. Black Cruiser and Archibald cleared out from the rest of the field over the concluding stages, the former winning by four lengths from Archibald, with Lucullent five lengths away third, Karamu fourth, and Prince Rufus the only other to finish, Crown Coin having fallen at the fence at the back of the course on the final round.

Black Cruiser, who had gone well in the Great Northern Hurdles, jumped well, and also outstayed Archibald. Both erred at'last fence. These were 111 A oniy two in the race when business was asked for. Curcalorm was tailing the field during the six furlonss or so she lasted. This was the third fall G. Holland sustained with the stable jumpers, Ilokioi and Tinopono having come to grief on the first day. Over the Big Country. When the field for the Great Northern Steeplechase was posted I.andlurd, Sea De’il, Prince ltufus, Lucullent, Crown Coin and Black Cruiser were missing. In a pool of over £16,000 Mahgoloirc was just a little belter favourite than Kawini, with Eerie third choice and Llewellyn, Tuki, Dick, Royal Abbey. Glcnolus, Kendal, Pitswor 111, Peter Amans, Pcler Maxwell, Birkcnclta in that order on the machine. When the field had settled down on its long journey Kendal was in front, followed by Peter Maxwell, Erie, Royal Abbey, and Peter Amans. As the held reached the course proper at the conclusion of a roupd Eerie fell at the old water jump when lying third to Peter Amans and Peter Maxwell. There were no mishaps by the time the stand double was reached, again, the order at this stage being Peter Amans, Kendal, Kawini. Royal Abbey, Llewcilvn. Dick. Peter Maxwell, Piltsworth, and Maligoloire, with Glenotus still I railing in the rear. After having a ••life” just prior to this Maligoloire tell al the fence hv Hie six furlong post entering on the last round. Kawini showed the way up the. hill the last lime In Llewellyn, Kendal, Peter (mans, r-ick. Tuki, and Royal Abbey. Homing down the incline Kawini was in front closely attended liv Dick, with Kendal Tuki. and Llewellyn following. Kawini’and Dick cleared the last fence almost on terms, with Pil.lsworth the n i v oßmr with a chance. Jn a desperate' finish Dick got the verdict by a neck from Kawini, with Piltsworlb. three-U'iarlers of a length away. thinS, . u ,rj Tuki fourth. Then came Llew-i-ilMi. Royal Abbey, Peter \,n;ins. B irk cue I la. Glenotus and Peter Maw.ell.

It was .1 pretty rare in watch. I here being' a "fine display of jumping. Eerie,

who showed indications in the birdcage of being tender, was going well up t" the the time she fell, hut there was such a long way to go that with her big weight in llie holding conditions il is bard lo say how she would have fared if she had stood up. Dick, who was well ridden by “Rangi” Thompson, did tiis job thoroughly, the little fellow taking his fences cleanly and staying on ip good style. He had previously been placed in the event, and his success to-day was popular. Kawini bored out on Dick badly during the pressure from the last fence home. Hjwever, he again proved himself, as in the hurdles, to he of game material. Pittsworth surprised by his showing, making no errors and finishing strongly after giving some ground to the two others hi the last half mile. Tuki plodded on, but was not brilliant enough over this country. Kendal, Royal Abbey, Peter Anions, and Llewellyn went well while their condition lasted, hut were done wTh when the real business was on. H. Burt, the rider of Eerie, had his collarbone broken.

King George Handicap. With Master O’Rorkc md Gold Jacket the only defections from the King George Handicap the big field of twenty-four runners went to the post. The Trentham representative Nadaritio, a winner on Thursday, was only slightly better supported than the Riccarton horse Zaragoza, with Merry Damon, York Abbey, and Titancss the next best fancied.

Chairman soon hit the front, showing the way along the back to King Lu, Nadarino, King Merv and Doleful Ditty. Crossing the top King Lu had charge, with Chairman, King Merv, Nadarino. Master Doon and Barometer as the nearest attendants. King Lu was still in charge as heads were turned for homo, King Merv, Merry’ Damon, and Chairman being next. In the run to the judge Merry Damon prevailed by three-quarters of a length over Barometer, one of the outsiders, with Zaragoza a head away, third, following by Namutcre, York Abbey, Muster Doon, Titancss, Danac and Siaosi. The winner, who is good in holding ground, showed that his recent racing had improved him. He had some ground lo make up to get. a good position for the run home, and finished in resolute style. Barometer saw it out well, while Zaragoza also finished strongly. York Abbey looked likely half way down the running, but petered out slightly in the final piece of the journey. King Lu and King Merv went fast for nearly six furlongs. The Panmure Hurdles. Tiic field of nineteen went to the post for the Panmure Hurdles. Bushwood Boy, a winner on Thursday. - favourite from Alaric and ,r >. with the Hannon triple bracket next. As Iney came down Llie hill to the first hurdle Tinohoro was the pilot, and he led through the* straight from Criss Abbey, Wedding March, Bright Light, Royal Fame, Alaric and West Abbov. Tinohoro Peeked oul at the first hurdle at the back, and Wedding March took the lead up lo llie top from Tinohoro, Glenidle, Zircon and Alaric. After the last hurdle was cleared Wedding March and Zircon fought nut a great finish, Zircon getting the verdict bv a head from Wedding March, with Flowing Bowl two lengths away, third, and Glenidle fourth, followed by Tlnopono, Rangatahi, West Abbey and Tinohoro. Zircon paid a false price after his form in the Great Northern Hurdles. This was the first success of the Merry Moment gelding over the battens. Wedding March went a great race for a comparative beginner. Tinohoro and Tinopono were coupled with him on the machine. Flowing Bowl came fast to get third money, while Glenidle performed promisingly, seeing it was. his first efford over hurdles for some time. Brushwood Boy fell at the second jump and broke his back, a promising hurdler coming to his end as an outcome. S. Henderson, the rider of Brushwood boy, had his collarbone broken. The Carbine Plate. The six horses carded came out for the Carbine Plate and the race induced very keen investing, over £15,000 being recorded. The Catmint—Cooing representative Cat Call was made favourite- from Quincoma and Pegaway. Hokioi went to the front from Maveclish and Cat Call. Along the back the order was Hokioi, Maveelish, Cat Call, Quincoma, Pegaway and Piton. Hair a mile from home the order was Hokioi, Maveelish, Quincoma and Cat Call (together), and Piton with Pegaway last. In the concluding stages Quincoma and Pegaway singled themselves out, Quincoma getting the verdict by two lengths and a-half from Pegaway, with liokioi third, six lengths away further back and Maveelish fourth. Then came Piton and Cat Call. Quincoma won well for the reason that the Pukekohe-owned and trained gelding was capable of outstaying his rivals. Pegaway beat the others easily but had no chance at the finish with the winner. Cat Call's showing was very disappointing, but this has not been the first unimpressive display by the Woodville-traincd representative at Ellcrslie. Total!sator Increase.

The tolalisator figures for the day were £89,799, an increase of £855 compared with the second day last year.
