SHOW FANCY WORK

JUDGE’S COMMENTS,

GENERAL SATISFACTION VOICED

Speaking of Ihc exhibits of fancywork at tlie Winter Show, Hie judge said thnl they were quiie up lo previous standards, but she again emphasised Hie necessity of people entering their articles in the right classes. For instance, in Hie class for fable or supper cloths, crochet excepted, there appeared a fine specimen with a deep bonier of crochet lace which would have been a prizewinner in its own class. There were many such errors and the judge had to reluctantly disqualify quite a number of good exhibits. In the class for exhibits from any hospital, Ibe articles were of such a high grade that the judge had to divide Diem into two classes —Hie raffia and the leather work—and gave special prizes to each section. Most of the exhibits came from the Evelyn Firth Home and were of the highest, standard and made mostly by invalid soldiers suffering from spinal troubles.

In the satin sl.iteh class there were a number of beautiful exhibits which were not satin slitch, but were mostly Corlicrlii or needle painting embroidery. One cushion of this work was reluctantly passed on account of it being in the wrong class. The class that was most pleasing was Hie one for articles made by ladies not under 70 years. Some beautiful and carefully-made exhibits were in this class and put to shame some of the work done by the younger exhibitors.

The section for hand-made rugs was a revelation of what can be done from waste material. The class for articles made from sugar hags was ■

also a lesson in usefulness and utility. The judge expressed her satisfaction at Hie general work and suggested a few new classes foe next year.
