SHORTHORN BREEDERS.

ENJOYABLE SMOKE CONCERT. NEED FOR CO-OPERATION. Always an enjoyable function noted foe its popularity and generous entertainment, the annual smoke concert tendered by the Waikato branch of the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Breeders’ Association to visiting breeders at Hamilton last evening was no exception. There was a good attendance which included visitors from all parts of the Dominion. Mill. |i. Diixfield presided. The chief toast of the evening, that of “the N.X. Milking Shorthorn Brccd-

ers’ Association” was proposed by Mr S. Lye. He stressed the need for co-operation among breeders and pointed out lhat the Association had a membership of 100 in 1913, whereas there were 600 members to-day. He also urged the necessity for testing and proper feeding of cattle. Ho mentioned that the Association had boon particularly fortunate in securing Ihe services of Mr A. \V. Green as secretary. New Zeaand tiad lost a valuable servant when Mr Green left the Agricultural Department,, but this had been the Association’s gain. In reply the Dominion president, Mr \V. J. Jenkins, remarked that dairying in this district was quite different to dairying in the South where he hailed from. He had frequently gone homo from the Waikato and remarked to his neighbours that they were wasting their time dairying there. In the Waikato and around Palmerston North there was grass in July which could only he. seen in the South about October, lie commented on the fascination of the breeding of pedigree cattle, and said the ’Royal Show would offer a grand opportunity to display the Shorthorn to advantage.

Ollier toasts were “The Branches,” proposed by Messrs A. Fisher, and Bond, and reply by Mr Hearscy. “ The Visitors,” proposed by Mr Duxlleld, reply by Mr Law. “Kindred Associations,” proposed by Mr G. E. Cuming, repy Messrs Marchant and Worster. The musical programme was contributed to by Messrs W. Ranstead, E. 11. Quill, Law, Cuming and Trott.
