OHINEMURI LICENSES.

A WAITOA OBJECTION. itly Telegraph—Press Associations PAEROA, Wednesday. Objection to the granting of a license for a hotel at Waitoa was discussed when the application was heard before the Ohincmuri Licensing Committee at Paeroa to-day. The application was made by Mary Blakeley Montgomery, who was formerly in the hotel f'jsiness in Karangahake, and it was stated by her counsel, Mr 11. L. Cooney, that she proposed to creel a new building at Waitoa to house the license.

A memorial objecting to the granting of this license was lodged on behalf of 476 residents of Waitoa, and Mr G. P. Gilchrist appeared in support.

Mr Cooney objected to the memorial on the grounds that it did not .contain any of the objections specified in section 91 of the Act.

After some argument the committee ruled out the memorial. Mr Gilchrist said residents objected to the granting of a license in an area remote from places where licenses formerly exisled. It was not desired that there should be a hotel close to the dairy factory where 73 men were employed. The chairman, Mr J. 11. Salmon, S.M., said there was also a counter memorial signed by a number of people If the committee allowed itself to be guided by the number of signatures on these petitions they would be countenancing a restricted local option poll. The committee obviously could not do that. The application was adjourned.
