A NOVEL SUGGESTION.

ART UNION FOR ROADS. PROPOSAL FROM TAMAIIERE. REFUSED BY PREMIER. A novel suggestion for raising funds for the upkeep of roads in the Tamaherc road district was put before the Prime Minister yesterday by members of the Tamahero Citizens’ Committee, when they asked to lie allowed lo run an art union for fhe purpose. Various members of the deputation pointed out the difficulties under which local bodies were labouring to And money for their roads, and that while art unions were permitted for all sorts of purposes none had yet been sanctioned for such a useful or national object as this. Mr Coates said that this idea of art unions for everything had got to cense. People were beginning to look to Ibis form of gambling as their only salvation. It. was never intended to go so far ns it had gone, and lie proposed to steady it up considerably. It seemed lo him quite wrong that sports and other bodies feel that this easy means of raising money was the only way out of their difficulties. lie did not approve of the principle, neither did he think our young people should be brought up in this idea. If there were lo be art unions at all they should be conducted by the Stale. White lie agreed that the burden for roads was becoming too heavy on ratepayers, yet the Government was approaching the, matter from a different angle. Ho would cause a report lo be made and sec if some reasonable scheme could be devised lo deal with all the principal roads, and so overcome Iho problem that was taxing the minds of local bodies everywhere.
