ANGLICAN SYNOD MEETING

The opening meeting of the Synod for the new Diocese of HamiltonTaranaki is an event of more Hum usual importance. It marks a distinct advance in the development of the religious life of the community. The Auckland diocese was large, "and altogether beyond the capabilities of one man—however, strong, willing and talented lie may be —to effectively administer. Its division, therefore, with the appointment of another spiritual overlord to concentrate upon a smaller area, should tend lo a quieting of interest in Church life, and in matters pertaining to religious ideals and aspirations. It is satisfactory to note that the members of the Anglican Church in this, which wc arc told is a materialistic age, recognise the claims the Church makes upon their time, talent, and substance, for they have shown by their generous response to the appeal for the Diocesan Fund, that they realise their obligations, and the large gathering of busy men now assembled in Hamilton for the important business of electing a Bishop is evident of intense interest in the higher tilings of life. The mailer is one which, while it effects the Anglican community particularly, has a general interest to all other branches of the Christian Church, for no branch of that Church any more than an individual, can live unto itself—lts influence must extend far beyond its own ccnuios. and as much depends upon Hie results of the Synod's deliberations the result of those deliberations will be awaited with sympathetic interest by all sections of the community and the hope will be general that Hie Synod will be guided lo choose as their Chief Pastor a man who lias all the qualifications lo efficiently discharge the high office in which he will bo placed.
