GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS.

Bay of Plenty meeting at Tauraaga on Saturday. Thames Trotting Club’s programme next Saturday. Masterton R.C.’s meeting will be lie id on Saturday. Westport’s programme opens on Saturday, and concludes on Monday. Ballymoy 11., who won at Napier, had contested thirteen races without once saluting' the judge. Llewellyn is being prepared at Ellerslic for the jumping season. The Ohiaomuri Club should’ show a good profit from its Jubilee gathering. Mr T. 11. Lowry wen both the chief handicaps at Napier, with Oreum and Phoenix Park. Sir Roseberry will be on hand when the cross country programmes arc on. Pliaola is being prepared for the Champagne Stakes. Willi Rcrcmoana and Glentruin in the handicappcr will not have far to go for the Easter Handicap topweights. Dan Quin has been racing more generously lately, and the Quin Abbey sprinter may yet come back. Ring the Bell did not race generously in his Weller engagement at Paeroa on Saturday. Aussie’s form at the Easier meeting will ho followed with a great deal of interest. Quinelte ran a good race in the Wailii Handicap on Saturday, after being left a good way at the start. The local trainer, T. E- Wilson, will start for Dannevirke on Friday with Bright Day, Bright Knight and Coma. Finelli has not been racing well since, the Spring, end her showings indicate that she lias lost some, of her form. Eh Timi may do, best under welter weights, hul (here is r.o doubt about the pace of liie Polydamou gelding i when he gets out.

it is likely tlmt some members of A. McArthur’s Mataniata team will be racing in the south, between this and Easter.

When Mountain Lion won Ihe Southland Cup lie interrupted a run of 13 successive defeats. Last season Mountain Lion contested 37 races.

This district is well represented in the jumping events at the Auckland Easter meeting.

The forward running of Father O’Flynn indicates that the Hawke's Bay gelding will soon be ready to show his best, lie should do well this autumn. Mr A. McMillan, of Tc Aroha, may be among the district trainers with horses racing at southern fixtures at Easter.

Although Surveyor’s retirement W3S definitely announcd, onec again his name figures amongst the entries —for the Auckland Easter Meeting, Surveyor has made as many threatened retirements as a footlights favourite, or a champion of the prize-ring.

Cawnpore has not been displaying marked form in his engagements round the country circuit. lie was handy for a term in the sprint race at the Ohinemuri meeting, but faded out when the real business began.

Royal Damon, who won at. Napier on Saturday, is one of t.he i-'olydamon family, and is a member of the team with which 11. Ilickoy has been haying an innings of late. Royal Damon is a solid sort, and is one of the best hacks about.

Le Ghoucas was always in the picture among the sprinters cn the first day at. the Oliincmuri meeting’, and.the favourite heat all but Prince Abbey. The Magpie gelding is a useful sort.

York Abbey, without having nny advantage from the start, ran a useful race in the W'ailii Handicap at Paeroa on Saturday, being in fourth place at the finish.

King Lu was accepted for the Cup and the sprint on the opening day of the Ohincmuri meeting. It was decided to give the Lucuillus —Shower Gold colt a run in the distance event, .hut lie shaped very poorly. It was not his true form.

Pcndennls went amiss on the eve of the Ohincmuri meeting which was hard luck for trainee Beady, who had the Day Comet hurdler in good trim, in view • of- the Master racing it is honed that Pendcnnis will not he long out of commission. Flying Juliet covered a good deal of ground in hoe two-year-old engagement at Ohincmuri meeting on Saturday, 1 but the Borneo lllly was running on' at the finish, and over a longer journey may not be long in making amends. As he fell at the second fence there was not much opportunity to got a line on Infante's prospects as a hurdler in his llrst start, which was at Hie Ohincmuri meeting. Mr Jos. Graham’s gelding is brad the right way to cateli a stake or two at the light batten game. Green Bonnet, the half-sister to Regent, is a hack who battles out her races in good style. She was not wcl! ridden in the Novice Handicap on Saturday, but was making good progress when she got clear. With a oetter run, Green Bonnet may soon be found winning a race. prince Abbey began quickly In his sprint engagement at Paeroa on Saturday, and running out the six furlongs in good style successfully kept Hie opposition at hay. Prince Abbey has won tw'o races for Mr Fraser Smith during the period ho has been in J. Anderton’s charge. Ohincmuri, a young full sister to one of the best handicap horses in Te Monanui, has been a winner this season, and may arrive again in her turn. She shows a good deal of pace and has the ability to get well placed early in her races.

Atapai is endowed with a fair turn of speed, luit four furlongs appears to be about the end of her tether as yetAs she becomes more seasoned the 0 ur.e li Abbey—Waiatapai two-year-old will do better. Kingticld bus quickly advanced in the weights, and he gives the impression that lie is capable of carrying them. This hack shews the ability to travel fast, which comes from his sire, King Lupin, ami he should not be long in doing further good service for his Cambridge owner. Eridanus, who ran Robespierre to a head in the Farewell Handicap at the Victoria Racing Club's meeting, ds by King John from Starglow, and started cn four occasions as a two-year-old last season without getting a place. Eridanus Was bred iit New Zealand, his sire, King John, being the Englishbred horse who was drowned in Wellington Harbour when he was being shipped to Sydney for sale, while his dam, Starglow, is by Martian from Fire Queen, by Royal Artillery from Fireside, by Perkin Warbcck 11. Old Tir.okiba came back to hurdle racing on the opening day at Paeroa. After being loft some distance at the starting post lie showed a lot of pac inside half a mile to have the frtont and w'as going well wiien he toppled out at the fence in the straight. Tinokaha has seen his best day, but (here may be a race concealed about hirn vet.

Barometer wins a race occasionally but bis form in between makes it no /surprise to find him at a long figure when lie gathers in the thick end ol’ of a stake. The form of tile Tiiurnham —Bouvaroia soloing at Tc Aroha and on the first day at Pacroa was far from impressive though, it is understood, he was expected to do better.

It is unfortunate that an unpleasant incident occurred prior to the running of the Winter Oats Handicap at Invercargill, as a result of which Mr A. S. Cambridge, (.he well-known Wingatui owner, has decided to go out of racing. The whole of his horses, including the imported Rosnnor, and several young ones, have been advertised for sale.—Christchurch Sun. Value may never be a great stayer, but "the Paper Money—-Grey Linnet filly has a lot of pace, and should pay her way over short courses. When she won the two-year-old event at Pacroa on Saturday she had ihc running in her favour, and IT. Lee, tier rider, nursed her well, for his mount to have something in reserve when Arch Arrow challenged in ihc run home,.

lierinlhla lias ]>nr>n backed ami beaten a few lime:; this season. In Urn Novice Handicap •>!, l’aeroa on Saturday the Mountain Knigli t —• Civilisation filly made some amends by accounting l'or (lie opposition in very decisive fashion over five furlongs. A quirk beginner, v-ith the pace lh.it Berinthia possesses should continue to be a useful proposition.

Yalfcon ran about a lot when I lie Matamata trained two-year-old was saddled up at, Paeron. He was nearly off the course at the turn for home, and lost a .rood deal of territory ns a result. Tii is was only Hie second start of the Valtyrian yonn, ester, who is susceptible of some improvement

and promises to be useful later on. Mcrasahib was llnishing on in the Xovicc Handicap at Paeroa on Saturday. The Quin Abbey—lridcsence mare was slow to get moving from a wide out berth at tlic barrier, but she showed some paco when she found matters to her liking, although she was then too far away from the leaders to have a oliancc.

Mount Marta was not goins tike a winner at any stage of the Ohincmuri Handicap. The Mountain Knight gelding may have been feeling the Directs of consistent racing-, at which ins previous recent form had boon good. He was badly placed, being last but one, as the field left the straight on Saturday, and with the pace set by the leader and ultimate winner, ■ really had -no chance from that out, although he improved his position in the running for a period later on.

Peter Maxwell, who has raced with some success on the flat and over hurdles, is being tried at the crosscountry frame. The Marble Arch gelding, who finished third in the Haurald Plains Steeplechase at Paeroa. was very cautious at his fences, which would be expected at bis first outing. When he begets confidence at the game this member of J. F. Tu fell on s team will do hotter. Transformer was one of the Ohinemuri Cup candidates who did not have a very favourable passage. The favourite was hurried towards the front at one stage before the last halfmile was entered on, but the eflort could not be continued to give him a reasonable chance when heads were turned for home. The track, too, may have been a bit firm for the best liking of the Thurnham— Mangamaire gelding in his only appearance at '.he meeting. New Moon was finishing faster than anything else in the concluding stages of the First Division of the Komaia Handicap at the Ohinemuri meeting. The Kilbroncy gelding was giving the winner, Chairman and the runner-up Winsome Boy, a big start when the field turned for home, but lie was only a little over a length and a half from Chairman as the line was crossed. Curraghmorc did not appear to handle the bends too well at Paeroa on Saturday, and was one of the Cup candidates to be ill served in this respect in the running. Her trainer, Af. J. Carroll, has the Arcliiestown —Lady Gwendoline marc very well just now, and tier prospects for the immediate future have the right to he summed up favourably, with ordinary luck. ‘ k Raliepoto bad bold out Cay Comet’s closing challenge in the second Division of the Komata Hack Handicap at Paeroa on Saturday, his limited number of supporters would have had reason to rejoice, as he w'as only seventeenth choice. Rhaepolo was doing it well in front pracUcall> the whole way, and it may have been that Gay Comet’s strong finishing run caught Rahepoto’s pilot unawares. Aliss Vera is not top class in the company she L now listed with, but she generally runs an honest race, and is likely to give trouble every lime. The All Black —Jena representative made a good showing in the Ohinemuri Cup. Although she never looked like winning, Miss Vera was always one of the forward runners, and was fourth, less than two lengths from Charlady at the finishing post. Blue Sky, one of the Polydamon stock, who is quartered in the same Paeroa stable as Scat and Eli Timi, has shown that he can gallop. Like Eh Timi, Blue Sky is a grey. The latter met with an interrupted passage in the early stages of his hack engagement on his home course on Saturday, but his later form in the running indicated that he might have given some trouble if everything had been favourable.

Muscari showed very improved form in the Oliinemuri Cup in which event he all but brought eft a surprise victory, as he was the outsider ia a held of fourteen, when he flnisncd in second place. The Solferno-Rose Red gelding ran a great race, and was gaining on the leader in the concluding stages. It was pleasing to sec Mr Fraser Smith’s colours prominent as the Waikato sportsman has not had much luck with his hrrscs lately. Trainer J. Andcrlon, who has charge of this owner’s team, is gradually getting them into shape. He produced an outright winner later on the same day, when Prince Abbey won the chief sprint event. Ruffles, who filled second place to Berinlhia in the Novice Handicap at the Oliinemuri meeting, is a member of W- C. Woods’ team, which includes Transformer. Ruffles, who has been prepared lately with the others of the string, at Tc Rapa, made a rather Impressive initial appearance, lie is a taking three-year-old gelding by Quin Abbey from a former useful racing candidate in Necktie and more is sure to be heard of this hack. Ruffles was not accepted for to-day.

Gay Comet should lie heard from again among the hacks before long. Charlie Coleman, who now has charge of the Day Cornel —Elnona cheslnut, is rapidly bringing him to his best, at which he proved last season that he was very useful. Gay Comet may have been a bit lucky to get. up in lime to head Rahepolo off at Pacroa on Saturday, but there was no doubt about the quality of his sustained run from the straight entrance home. There was no doubt of the merit of Charlady’s win in the uhinemuri Cup. The Absurd —Lady D marc had the pace to get out quickly and always had an uninterrupted passage in front. While it may have surprised many people to find one of this breeding running out ten furlongs, Charlady,’s success was but another instance of Absurd’s stock gelling a middle distance. Her trainer, J. Williamson, has done well with (his mare lately and it would he no surprise to find her adding to her record before long. When Rcrcmoana was saddled up for the Jackson Stakes, which he won at the recent Wanganui Jockey Club's meeting, ho was carrying more condition than he usually does, and obviously had not done a great deal of solid work writes "The Watcher.’; At the time it was an open secret that Trainer Cox expected Lady Cavendish to beat, her stable companion, but c : e.spito the want of a race Rcrcmoana beat the filly. As Rcrcmoana will be pounds better at Easter one can realise what a formidable opponent he will prove. Bourn, Ihe winner of Urn hurdles In Hio opening day at Pacroa,’ promises to he a handy sort in cross country events later on in the season. The Winlorbourn ehcsluul can muster up a useful turn of speed and is invariably capable of producing a good liinishing run. He shapes belter at the big jumps Ilian at hurdling and as be is only a young horse at the game there is plenty of time ahead of him. Scat finished in third place in the Ohinemuri Cup, bid the circumstances surrounding the running of I lie Day Cuinel.—Ret gelding gave the iinoressjon I hat if nverylhiiig had been favourable he would have been closer up. An inquiry was opened inlo Scat’s behaviour during the race, it having being' slated that he hart lokon charge of his rider, Monklcy, in Ihc concluding stages. The inquiry was to have

bean resumed to-day at Paeroa. Scat would be best served with, a strong horseman, but there is no doubt that he has the ability to gallop fast. In the last Auckland Cup, Rapine 9.8 won from Count Cavour 5.13 and Te Monanui 8.7. For the Sydney Cup, whicli event is run over a similar distance (two miles), the Australian Jockey Club’s handicapper awarded Pilliewinlde 9.13 and To Monanui 8.13. On those figures, Pilliewinkie is not handicapped as the erpial of RapineOn the form the pair showed in this Dominion the estimate is correct,_ but recent racing suggests that _ Pih*®" winkie has improved considerably since crossing to Australia writes “The Watcher.”

Splendid nominations have been received for the Auckland Easter Meeting, not only for the major, events, but for the minor handicaps as well. Class is well represented in the Easter Handicap, with Glentruin, Income, Reremoana, Automme, Gold Light, Royal Divorce, Motley, Grand Knight, Rapine and Ngata. Count Cavour figures m the Autumn Handicap in addition to Gold Light, Rapine, Musketoon, Ngata, Royal Divorce, and Grand Knight. The payments for the St. Lcgor, Oaks, and Champagne Stakes, arc in every way satisfactory, and there were no defections of importance. Biplane, who was a great galloper while in the hands of R. J. Mason, is at the stud in Australia, and his stock promises to do welL Of his prospects at the stud in Australia a writer in the “Referee” writes as follows: “With two winners, Seaplane and Biavon already to his credit, Biplane has undoubtedly made a good start at his first stud season, and Seaplane's second success at Warwick Farm should have the eiTcct of making yearlings buyers sit up and take notice ■of the stock of the dual Derby winner. And the chances are that it will not bo long before. Seaplane -further advertises his sire, as on Saturdaay he was weighted at 9.5, drew number 20 position at the barrier, and scored very easily from Wiijumba and Persuasion, the latter of whom is a sister of Cajole, who was successful later in the afternoon.”

The vagaries of the Derby winner Manfred at the starling post form the subject of much comment .at. the hands of the various critics in Melbourne. In the course of a reference to the colt “Cardigan,” of the “Australasian.” remarks that, though he may walk to the post <tuite composedly, the mental “kink” develops when the order to line up is given and the barrier is sighted. McCalman, the trainer of Manfred, states that in the stable the colt is extremely easy to handle and is quite devoid of trickiness there. “Cardigan” writes: “Needless to say Messrs Chaffey and McCalman arc puzzled to know what to, do for the best with Manfred. They are certainly- not going to remain inactive, but, as I wrote last ycai after his refusal to go off with the field in the Caulfield Guineas, it is in my opinion simply a matter of the humour Manfred is in whether he will leave the mark. He might jump out three or four times in succession, but the trouble will be never removed, and there will always jic a doubt about his starting. The devil is in him and is something that cannot be explained.”
