FRANKTON RAILWAY STATION.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—l may be hammering at a theme already well-worn by many protests, but before I leave Hamilton, after a very pleasant, week-end, I should like to say what I think of the facilities for handling luggage at the Franklon station. They arc, I hope, unique. I arrived from Auckland on Saturday ’with a heavy piece of luggage that I wished to take to a hotel near by. There was no way of getting it save carrying it myself along the long platform over the bridge and down Ihe street, and I had much else to lake with me. The railway staff were polite and sympathetic, but they could not help me. One of them did say that I might get a porter when the train had gone—in about half-nn-liour’s time. 1 left the bag at ihe station, but in ihe evening 1 had to return and carry it away. 1 put it. to one of the staff: "Wlial would happen if a’woman, travelling alone, arrived wilh a cabin trunk?" He said something about taking it over Hie line in a trolley. I spared him Hie question what would happen if she had a baby as well —perhaps Hie baby would go on Ihe trolley loo —but 1 imagine that sumo mothers among your readers ceuld tell tales. Frankton lias long been notorious as nno of (lie worst stations in Now Zealand, if not the world, in this respect, and it is especially hard on women. The thing is ready a scandal. That so important a junction should lack the services that in all oilier civilised countries arc freely at Hie disposal of the travelling public Is discreditable botli to the authorities and to the public that tolerates it. —I am, etc., A. E. MULGAN.
