ENGINEER'S REPORT.. The following report submited by the engineer was adopted: -The weather and other circur.. st-nces were favourable and very considerable progress was made during , the month with the loan works. 4387* raids of metal were received b> ran at Hinuera, Okoroire, and Tirau stations. Of this total 3743, carted bj Gardner and Kinnear, went to the Waitoa-Taupo main highway and the ba'ance, carted by the Motor Transport Co., lo Waiomo Main Road. 1038 i yards of crushed metal were supplied from the Gordon Quarries to MatamataGordon Main Road. Leaman and Stuart delivered 1316 yards of Rhyolile and Walsh 316 J yards lo WaitoaTaupo main highway south of Putaruru. Mahood and Co. delivered 238 vards of rock to Maungatautari main read and Strong 405 A yards to Whitehall main road. Hart and Brown delivered 630 yards of shingle to Okauia Road, Graham 300 yards of shingle to Kensington Street and 277 yards of sand to French Pass, County trucks 303 yards of shingle to Te Pol roads and 167 yards of sand to Rangtanuku Gardner 366} yards of sand to Totlran's road. Of this total of 1.1,477} vards of materials, 53751 have gone to Main Highways and 4059 on to .< other Main roads. Rothcry has commenced crushing at Omahine. Graham is at Te Poi carting shingle to Old Tauranga Road. Kinnear has moved to Tirau and is sanding parts of Parapara road and metalling Tirau-Oko-roire road. The gaps in Waiomo road are now closed and the metal is be- . ing widened out to conform to the County roads scheme. Bemrose is making very slow progress at Hinuera and has been directed to speed his work up. Middleton has the grading of Waotu-Puketurua roads practically completed and has commenced metalling portions of Huihuitaha rood. Strickland is making good progiess with formation in Te Wtictu road. The metalling of Mangawhcro Road has been recommenced. Contract G 6, the formation of portions of Paraonui road was let to A. B. Robbie at Is for soil and 2s Gd for rock. Your committee interviewed the Wairere Quarry Co., and agreed to increase their prices by 2s per yard as from January 27 last. Arrangements were also made for the Piako County Council to supply metal to the same works, viz:—Matamata-Gordon Road. Tho sfeam roller followed up metal spreading on main highway near Hinuera arid on.the Matamata-Gordon road whilst the motor roller was employed at Te Poi, Waiomo Main Road and the Main Highway near Okoroire railway. The second-hand steam roller offered to the Council was purchased for £473 on rail at Auckland. The cletrac outfit is at present stationed on the metalling works in Pularuru area. Tin Wehr grader returned from tho. Tokoroa roads and is working its way through Karapiro and Maungatautari roads. A now Hon truck has been obtained for Ihe use of Foreman Emslie; and similar machines are necessary for Foreman Maynard at Mataniaia and Foreman Pemborton at Pularuru. Tenders were called and are before Hie mcefing for contract No. G 7, Oraka Bridge, No. 18, Main Highway and for Contract No. 68. clerk's residence, Tirau.

Claims for grants and subsidies on cost of works have been submitted during the past week as under:— Rebate on metal freights for feeder roads, £55 16s: Public Works Department road grants, £5370 10s ltd; Main Highways. maintenance. £1320 lis 3d: Main Highways, consiruction, £I7OO is 6d; total: £11.450 3s Sd. Claims already paid lo the Council during the current year are as follows: Public Works Department, £714 17s 8; Main Highways, maintenance, £.T29 16s 4d: Main Highwavs, conduction. £35.-, 2s (id; total, £1599 lGs 6d; £13,050 0s 2d.
