SPORTING.

TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB. j THE FIRST DAY'S RACING. j In the Trial Handicap Hangawera and Roval Flight began quickest. Crossing the lop, Royal Flight died away, and Hangawera led into the straight from Monday, Maveelish, Appellant, Killutc and Luxurious. In the run to the post a great race saw Killutc win by a short head from Luxurious and Appellant, who ran a deadheat. Hangawera was almost in line fourth. Monday was next, and then came Maveelish and Some Lady. After the race the Judicial Committee at the request of the stipendiary stewards, considered what happened to Maveelish in the race. The explanation of McTavish, rider of Monday, was that his horse got on to the heels of Hangawera, and he had to case his mount to prevent him from coming down. In doing so he came out on to Appellant and Maveelish. The committee accepted the explanation. An Outsider Scores. In the Zealandia Handicap, Gold Fern was left and lost several lengths, and when the field had settled down Dan Quin was in front from Pinon, Archeen, Prince Abbey, and Uralla. Crossing the top Alfort , Pinon, and Uralla were the leaders and Alfort was still in front when they came to the turn, where Uralla was second, followed by Pinon, Daylight, Miss Vera, and Namutere. In the run down the straight Uralla (eleventh favourite) challenged, and : heading Alfort, won by three-quarters of a length, Daylight was a neck away third, and Archeen fourth, followed by Pinon, Joy Ride, Gold Fern, Miss Vera, and Loyal Irish.

Irish Jig Arrives

In the Hauraki Hurdles Irish Jig was the first to turn for home from Daddy's Girl, with Bustler, Flowing Bowl and Some Fashion following. Irish Jig was first over the last fence, and then Daddy's Girl and Bustler challenged, a great race going to Irish Jig by half a head, with the Bustler a neck 'behind Daddy's Girl. Flowing Bowl was fourth, followed by Some Fashion, Bright Light, and Rippling. Marigahewa fell at the second fence from home, and Praiseworthy at the last obstacle. The stewards met to consider a complaint of interference lodged against Thompson, rider of Irish Jig. The lookout stewards reported that Irish Jig had crossed in front of Daddy's Girl, but at the time was at the prescribed distance allowed. The stewards, therefore, decided not to alter the judge's placing?, but suspended Thompson, rider of Irish Jig, for a fortnight.

The Cup Race.

Musketoon wound up favourite for the Takapuna Cup from Transformer, Town Bank, and Desert Glow. Along the back Royal Present and Tresillian were together in front of Desert Glow and Transformer, but at the half-mile Royal Present had half a length the best of Tresillian, wilh Transformer, Desert Glow,. and . Town .Bank following. As they ran across the top the leaders bunched, and there was very little between Royal Present, Transformer, Town Bank, Desert Glow, and Tresillian. Approaching the home turn Desert Glow showed clear, and led into the straight from Transformer, Royal Present, and Town Bank. In the run up the straight Desert Glow kept off the opposition, fo win. by a length from Town Bank, with Transformer half a length away, third. Royal Present was fourth, followed by Curcaform, Musketoon, Tresillian and Bright Light. Curraghmore Wins Nicely.

The Waikato registered its' second victory when the Archiestown—Lady Gwendoline marc,- Curraghmore, scored nicely for the Frankton stable presided over by M. J. Carroll. Her. success was ■in the Ferry Handicap, of nine furlongs, for which Brushwood Boy and Hokioi' were better backed than Curraghmore. The latter, who was ridden by W. Bagby, prevailed by a length and a half from the favourite, with Hokioi, one of the Hannon team, in third berth. Another to the Waikato.

The Waikato made it three on end when King Abbey led the field home in the Orewa Hurdles, of one mile and three-quarters, for which Kawa, Black Cruiser and Archibald carried good money. King Abbey, who was making his first appearance for some time, handled himself well, and his pace was a valuable factor. Light-weighted Miss Melva got second, while the favourite, Kawa, was in the next place. He again failed to go well left-handed. Cawnpore Beats the Sprinters. Cawnporc, who was nicely handicapped on top of his recent successful form at Trcntham, was the popular selection for the Stewards' Handicap, in which tlie sprinters were' engaged. The Desert Glow stable scratched Finelli, but Air Queen was left in the race. Cawnpore justified the confidence reposed in him by duly landing tlie stake from the Ngaruawabiaowned and trained Dayguard, who is aiways liable to be a nuisance. Tutankhamen was third and Nancy Lee fourth. York Abbey was the unlucky horse.

Totalisator Returns.

During tlie day the totalisator investments amounted to £62,727, compared with £62, 511 10s last year, an increase of £215 10s.'
