THE RAILWAY DISASTER.
CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER. DRIVER BEFORE COURT. NAPIER, Thursday. Frederick Lavin, driver of the express train which left the rails at Opapa on September 22, appeared to face a manslaughter charge- at Napier to-day. Mr. R. W. Dyer. S.M., was on th'e Bench. Keen interest had been aroused, and the Court was crowded. There is a bi? list of witnesses to be heard, including several whose testimony will be of an expert nature. Delcclive Butler conducted the case for the Crown. Mr B. J. Dean appeared for Lavin, Mr 11. B. Lusk for the Railway Department, Mr E. J. liallelt for the relatives of Miss Kathleen Begley (deceased), and Mr Gleeson for the fireman (T. Donovan) and S. Marshall (enginedriver, who was a passenger on the train). Detective Butler briefly outlined the rase before' proceeding with the evidence.
