CRISIS IN BOMBAY.
CUT IN WAGES PROPOSED

At a conference of representatives of Ihe r\ri 11 Owners - Association and Labour leaders,in view of the crisis in the Bombay cot lon industry, the chairman of the Mill Owners' Association said that if immediate action were not taken it was feared that they would have to close down half the mills immediately.. The owners wanted to avoid extensive unemployment, but (hey were also anxious to reduce their losses. If wages were cut by 15 per cent, it would save six lakhs of rupees monthly. The present monthly loss was about 2i lakhs. The men wanted a guarantee of the restoration of wages as soon as tlie crisis passed, and the employers promised sympathetic consideration. Meanwhile the Government is being urged to suspend the collection of excise duty and to impose a higher duty on goods competing with Indian manufacturers.
