SLEEPY SICKNESS.

CURIES BY YOUNO DOCTOR, Mr John Swift, chairman of tine Pres Cot, Lancashire, tJnidii infirmary Committee,told a, press representative that the medical superintendent, Dr. llay, his successfully treated two cases of sleepy sickness by inoculation. Mr Swift stated that two patients treated la the ordlhary way for sleepy sickness at the institution died. A boy, aged 10, already in the the institution, developed the disease, and Dr. Hay inoculated him with a special vaccine. A woman of 22 was later admitted suffering from sleepy stekness, and Dr. Hay inoculated her with blood serum from the boy. “In her case,” said Mr Swift, “the inoculation worked like magic. She improved almost immediately, and in a week or two was out of danger, Without having a relapse. She has now been out of the instlution for about a month, and is in perfect health. The boy also recovered. “Dr. Hay’s appointment was objected to because of his youth.” Dr. Hay, who took the degree of Gh.B. at Aberdeen University in 1921, said that this statement was correct, but he could add nothing to it. The Ministry of Health are investigating the statement. The guardians have passed a resolution congratulating Dr. Hay.
