CLAUDELANDS SUBWAY.

COST TO RATEPAYERS. A question, asked on a previous occasion by Cr. W. Carr Rollett, as to the total cost of constructing the Claudelands subway to the Hamilton Borough Council, was repeated again by that sentleman at last night's meeting of the Hamilton v Borough. Council. The chairman of the Works Committee, Cr. P. H. Watts, read 'the following figures:— Figures supplied by Engineer's Department :—Wall, £325 18s lOd; stormwater, £336 4s 8d; footpath, £325 lis 3d; road, £321 17s 3d; kerbing and channelling, £342 14s 3d. Figures supplied by Gas Department: —Lowering gas mains, £IT3 10s 9d. Figures supplied by Waterworks Department:—Lowering water mains, £55 7s 6d—£lßßl 4s 6d. Less received for sale of spoil, £2 lis 6d—» £IB7B 13s. Paid to Railway Department, £1250. Less,to be refunded as per Department letter, 9th July, 1924, £343 19s 4d—£9o6 0s Bd. Total cost to Counoil to date, £2784 13s Bd. Paid by Department (including amount deducted below), £2366 8a lid. Deduction as above, £906 0s 8d —£1460 8s 3d. Total payments by both parties, £4245 Is lid. His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. R. Fow) and Cr. C. J. W. Barton commented that the work was thoroughly workmanlike and a credit to the town. Cr. de la Mare said that while the job might be satisfactory, what was very unsatisfactory was the fact that the figure previously given as the cost of the work was entirely wrong. He distinctly recollected, when asked the cost some months ago, the engineer stated that it was £I3OO. Cr. P. H. Watts said the engineer, in giving the oost, had apparently quoted the actual disbursements by his department. Cr. Rollett agreed that the work was a first-class one, but it was deplorable that there should have been such errors committed with regard to the figures. Had the speaker known at the time that the work was going to cost so much he doubted whether he would have voted for it. His Worship said that when the original plans were drawn up, the retaining walls were not included. These were an extra, and were decided oh later.
