BOXING.

TE AROHA ASSOCIATION. The Te Aroha Boxing Association can justly claim all the kudos connected with the success that attended their efforts to reorganise boxing interests at Te Aroha on Tuesday evening. One of the 'biggest houses' greeted a large programme of boxing bouts. It is some years since the Boxing Association was first formed, but soon after its formation it met with disaster for professionalism was encouraged rather than amateurism. Well do the guarantors remember the big opening programme when two of our biggest and best boxers were starred. To greet them the large Theatre Royal was crowded. The second round saw a knock-out which -sounded the death knell for the Association. However, new people have new ideas of management, so with the advent of experience boxing enthusiasts in Te Aroha another effort was made to place the Association on a more secure foundation. A number of the boxing fraternity met and appointed officers, amongst whom was Mr C. Taylor, as president, and Mr C. Gibson as treasurer, and right from the sounding of the gong these gentlemen, backed by a solid executive, made the pace hot in pursuit of success. That their ambition was gained goes without saying, for the admission paid at the door amounted to about £BO. The programme consisted of a dozen different bouts. The principal attraction was the competition for the Firkin Challenge Cup. There were seven brace of competitors. The fights were clean, and fair, and square, and attracted the spontaneous hearty approval of the spectators. The cup was presented for competition between teams from Morrinsville and Te Aroha and the results were as follows, Te Aroha being mentioned first:—E. Sainsbury (7.11) lost to N. Campbell (8.4), E. Nolan (9.6) beat Matheson (10.0), W. Johnson (11.9) beat Taylor (11.13), Joe Farmer (10.0) beat Malcolm (10. G), P. Coombes (9.12) lost to C. Crawford (9.6), G. Johnston (11.4) beat Journey (11.0), Dyson (9.4) lost to J. Robson (9.0). The results showed Te Aroha 4 wins. Morrinsville three wins. Bat. Nelson v. Peryer.

This was the star attraction. Both Nelson (Te Aroha) (9.11) and Peryer, 9.12 (Auckland) were in good form and fought the full six twominute rounds. The exhibition was generally even with a shade of odds in favour of Nelson at the end of each round. Peryer's in-fighting was clever nevertheless Nelson made a more able defence. One pretty feature of this bout was when Peryer slipped and fell on the mat Nelson at once halted until his adversary again "presented arms." This action, brought forth the spontaneous appreciation of the audience. Indeed this incident was characteristic of the whole of the bouts. Nelson was awarded the victory. Other bouts were Wickey, Te Aroha (9.1) v. Noakes, Morrinsville (8.12), the latter winning after a clever display of boxing. W. Collodge, Waihi (9.121) was awarded a gold medal for his victory over L. Leach, Waihi (9.12) in a bout of six. two-minute rounds. Baden, Auckland, (9.0) lost to J. Colledge, Waihi, (9.0), who secured the only knockout in the programme, Colledge was awarded a gold medal. A concluding bout between Cobb (10.10) and Crawford, Te Aroha (10.0) resulted in a decisive victory for Crawford, whose style was much admired. Mr C. A. Arthur acted as referee and carried out his duties in a most exacting and efficient manner. Messrs R. Sprague, R. Brenan and T. Bonditch were the judges, and their decisions were never questioned. Mr E. Jones was the timekeeper. The stage arrangements were carried out by Mr R. Brenan. The Supper. A large number of guests were entertained at supper after the evening's programme. The club's president, Mr C. Taylor, was in the chair, supported by Mr R. Coulter (Mayor of Te Aroha), Mr Wallnutt (Mayor of Waihi), Dr. G. G. Kenny, Mr Manners, Mr C. A. Arthur, Mr R. Sprague and other prominent sportiug enthusiasts. Mi- Taylor extended his appreciation for the attendance of so many visitors. Tho efforts of the Te Aroha executive had been crowned with success, due, no doubt, to every effort being made to carry the programme through in a clean manner. That they had been successful in this direction was evident for they had met with the unanimous approval of every one present. Mr Taylor thanked the donors of trophies, the lads who had supplied the programme, and concluded by thanking Mr Arthur for his very excellent services as referee and the judges for their Impartial decisions. (Applause)'. The Mayor (Mr R. Coulter) said he was glad of the opportunity to say how satisfactory arrangements had been carried out by Mr Taylor and his executive. The programme was a credit to the promoters and to the performers. Speaking of the referee the Mayor said it was a surprise to him to know that they had such an efficient referee in To Aroha. Mr Coulter concluded by proposing the health of the promoters and performers and visitors. Messrs Robson (Morrinsvißc) and S. Farmer, Waihi, responded as visitors. The Mayor of Waihi (Mr S. Wallnutt), also congratulated Te Aroha on its excellent start—for no better exhibition of boxing could be seen in any other part of the Dominion. The Club's executive deserved every credit. Mr Manners, vice-president of the Association, also spoke in words of appreciation of the contestants. Dr. G. G. Kenny (Fanning Island), also eulogised the efforts of Mr Taylor and his officers in the conduct of the tournament. Mr F. Firkin referred to the game competition that was put up for the cup and it gave his son great pleasure to donate a cup for such a healthy recreation. Mr C. A. Arthur, the referee, said it was a pleasant duty for him to officiate. He depreciated the American system of clinching and favoured the English system of a straight left punch and open fighting. ALLEGED IRREGULARITIES. Arising out of the Inquiry conducted by the Manawatu Boxing Association into irregularities in fhc McGabe v. Dc Clecnc bout, on August 23, at. Palmcrston North, the occasion of the fight between Brown ami Clinton, for a £2OO purse, the Wellington centre has notified that the following decision must bo carried out pending consideration by the New Zealand Council; —r. nc Cleene and C.
